Critics Consensus

MMA star and first-time actress Gina Carano displays ample action-movie chops in Haywire, a fast-paced thriller with a top-notch cast and outstanding direction from Steven Soderbergh

Audience Consensus

Haywire is like watching a mixed martial arts match on the big screen, but with a little bit of revenge thrown in. Gina Carano may not be the next Meryl Streep, but she sure knows how to kick some butt. Steven Soderbergh’s direction keeps the action moving at a fast pace, and the fight scenes are choreographed to perfection. It’s not going to win any Oscars, but if you’re looking for a fun action flick, Haywire is definitely worth a watch.

Critics Consensus

This emotionally gripping examination of a marriage on the rocks isn’t always easy to watch, but Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling give performances of unusual depth and power

Audience Consensus

Blue Valentine is a rollercoaster of emotions that will leave you feeling like you just got off a ride you weren’t quite ready for. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams deliver performances that will make you feel like you’re watching a real couple go through the ups and downs of love. Just make sure you don’t bring a date unless you want to end up feeling like you need a therapist. Overall, it’s a beautifully tragic film that will leave you thinking about it long after the credits roll.

Storyline

Dean Pereira and Cindy Heller Pereira are a young, working class married couple – Dean currently working as a painter, and Cindy working as a nurse in a medical clinic – with a young daughter named Frankie. Despite their relatively tender ages, they are both ravaged by the life they’ve eked out together and by the experiences they’ve had leading into their marriage. Dean, a high school drop out, comes from a broken home, where he never really had a mother figure. He never saw himself getting married or having a family despite falling in love at first sight with Cindy. He doesn’t have any professional ambition beyond his current work – which he enjoys since he feels he can knock off a beer at 8 o’clock in the morning without it affecting his work – although Cindy believes he has so much more potential in life. Cindy also comes from a dysfunctional family, with her own mother and father not setting an example of a harmonious married or family life. One of her previous serious relationships was with Bobby Ontario, that relationship which has a profound affect on many aspects of her marriage to Dean. Dean and Cindy head off on an overnight getaway together without Frankie, the getaway which may provide a clearer picture if their marriage can survive its many issues.

The Warrior” is a visually stunning film that takes you on a spiritual journey through the Himalayan Mountains. While the story may not be the most original, the director infuses it with a sense of reverence that keeps it from feeling tired. It’s a tale of redemption and transformation that will leave you feeling enriched. Plus, who doesn’t love a good fable? Just be prepared for a slow pace and minimal dialogue. Critics Consensus

Vision: From the Life of Hildegard von Bingen is a film that captures the essence of a woman who was ahead of her time. While some critics may find it didactic and stilted, it is a beautifully rendered story of a 12th-century mystic who embraced faith, art, and science. Sukowa’s portrayal of Hildegard is intriguingly complex, and the film captures an austere, absorbing, and very realistic portrait of the desire for female independence. Von Trotta’s impressive lighting and design, along with striking production design and cinematography, make this period piece feel fresh and captivating. It’s not just a religious movie, but a movie about people who take religion seriously, and it’s a portrayal of an immortal spirit thriving in a unique vision. Overall, Vision is a memorable and lovely film that will leave you captivated and inspired.

Audience Consensus

Vision: From the Life of Hildegard von Bingen is like a history lesson, but with a cool teacher who makes it interesting. Sure, it’s a bit stilted and didactic, but what biopic isn’t? Plus, it’s got some seriously impressive lighting and design that makes it feel like a period piece without being boring. And let’s not forget about the badass protofeminist subject, Hildegard von Bingen, who embraced faith, art, and science. Overall, it’s a lovely and lyrical film that’s worth checking out.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Vision is didactic and a bit stilted-although to be fair, so are most mainstream biopics rehashing historical events more familiar than this one, which presents its subject as a rousing protofeminist.

Critics Consensus

Elia Suleiman’s “The Time That Remains” is a masterful work of cinema that delicately balances the political and personal. Through his use of deadpan humor and gentle observation, Suleiman manages to shed light on the Arab-Israeli conflict from a Palestinian perspective without succumbing to the usual ideological hijacking. While the film may be deeply personal and intimate, it also manages to condense historical events in a highly effective manner, achieving a symbiosis between historical revisionism and the social and political reality of the Palestinians. Suleiman’s gift for cinema is on full display here, and while some may find the film elliptical, it is ultimately a refreshingly alternative take on a complex and often fraught subject.

Audience Consensus

The Time That Remains” is a film that manages to tackle the Arab-Israeli conflict in a unique and refreshing way. Director Elia Suleiman’s use of humor and gentle observation allows for a deeper understanding of the issue without resorting to violence or ideology. While the film may be political, its simplicity and personal touch make it a deeply personal and intimate experience. Plus, who doesn’t love a good dose of deadpan and absurdist humor? Overall, “The Time That Remains” is a must-watch for anyone looking for a different perspective on a complex issue.

Critics Consensus

While it may lack the revelatory punch of Polanski’s finest films, Ghost Writer benefits from stylish direction, a tense screenplay, and a strong central performance from Ewan McGregor

Audience Consensus

The Ghost Writer may not be the greatest film of all time, but it’s definitely worth a watch. Polanski’s direction and the suspenseful dialogue will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Plus, it’s always fun to see a political thriller where no one gets away clean. And let’s be real, watching a thinly disguised Tony Blair get put through the wringer is pretty satisfying. Overall, The Ghost Writer is a good time and a solid addition to the genre.

Storyline

An unremarkable ghost-writer has landed a lucrative contract to redact the memoirs of Adam Lang, the former UK Prime Minister. After dominating British politics for years, Lang is campaigning for his foundation with his wife in the USA. He lives on an island, in luxurious, isolated premises complete with a security detail and a secretarial staff. Soon, Adam Lang gets embroiled in a major scandal with international ramifications that reveals how far he was ready to go in order to nurture UK’s “special relationship” with the USA. But before this controversy has started, before even he has closed the deal with the publisher, the ghost-writer gets unmistakable signs that the turgid draft he is tasked to put into shape inexplicably constitutes highly sensitive material.

Critics Consensus

Big Fan is a clever and darkly comedic character study that explores the psyche of a die-hard sports fan. Writer-director Robert D. Siegel’s script is solid, and first-time director Siegel shows promise in his ability to capture the bleakness of Staten Island. However, it’s Patton Oswalt’s performance as the pathetic and obsessive Paul that truly shines, making him a character that is both sympathetic and cringe-worthy. While the film may stretch credulity in spots, it manages to keep its eye on the ball and deliver a compelling and astute observation of the behaviors and mindset of the fan who sees no distinction between himself and the team. Overall, Big Fan is a must-see for anyone who has ever been a die-hard sports fan or knows someone who is.

Audience Consensus

Big Fan” is a movie that will make you laugh, cringe, and maybe even feel a little sorry for the main character, Paul. Patton Oswalt delivers an incredible performance as a die-hard sports fan who takes his love for his team a little too far. The film is a great character study that explores the mindset of someone who sees themselves as part of the team, and it’s both funny and sad at the same time. While the direction may be a little rough around the edges, it’s still a compelling and entertaining movie that’s definitely worth checking out. Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself feeling a little sorry for Paul by the end of it!

It’s a classic situation, transplanted to a small, petty arena. When I think of this movie, I think of Oswalt, how his anguish feels real (whether we understand it or not) and how his face unaccountably becomes an offbeat locus of dignity.

Audience Consensus

World’s Greatest Dad is a dark comedy that will make you laugh and cringe at the same time. While the pacing may be a bit off and the emotional depth lacking, Robin Williams delivers some of his best acting in this film. Don’t be fooled by the jolly poster, this is not your typical family-friendly Robin Williams movie. But if you’re up for a risky and uncomfortable ride, this film is worth a watch. Plus, it’s probably the best movie ever made about someone who masturbates themselves to death.

Audience Consensus

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is like that one roller coaster at the amusement park that you go on just because you’re too scared to try the big ones. It’s not the most thrilling ride, but it’s still a fun time. The CGI is impressive and the British character actors steal the show. Plus, it’s cool to see the characters grow up and deal with more mature themes. Overall, it’s a solid addition to the Harry Potter franchise.

Storyline

This is the tale of Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), an ordinary eleven-year-old boy serving as a sort of slave for his aunt and uncle who learns that he is actually a wizard and has been invited to attend the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry is snatched away from his mundane existence by Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), the groundskeeper for Hogwarts, and quickly thrown into a world completely foreign to both him and the viewer. Famous for an incident that happened at his birth, Harry makes friends easily at his new school. He soon finds, however, that the wizarding world is far more dangerous for him than he would have imagined, and he quickly learns that not all wizards are ones to be trusted.

Director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves crafted a challenging and decidedly mature film that paves the way perfectly for the two-part finale.

There is an overriding sense of urgency in the penultimate film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince which moves at breakneck speed from the opening sequence itself.

Good film directed for a teenage audience in which not only is magic taught but also how stereotypes affect it while the film itself recreates some British stereotypes. [Review in Spanish]

Movie Plot & More
Plot
