Critics Consensus

Led by powerful performances from Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, The Skeleton Twins effectively mines laughs and tears from family drama

Audience Consensus

The Skeleton Twins is like that one family reunion where you’re laughing and crying at the same time. Wiig and Hader’s performances are the highlight of the movie, making you forget that you’re watching a film about two dysfunctional siblings. The lip sync dance off to Jefferson Starship’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now is a scene that will have you hitting the replay button. While the ending may leave you wanting more, the journey is worth it. Overall, The Skeleton Twins is a must-watch for anyone who loves a good character study with a side of humor.

Critics Consensus

Rich in atmosphere and anchored by a powerful performance from Nicolas Cage, Joe is a satisfying return to form for its star — as well as director David Gordon Green

Audience Consensus

Joe is a movie that will make you feel like you’re in the middle of a Texas summer, sweating and swatting away flies. Nicolas Cage gives a performance that’s both restrained and explosive, and the film’s naturalistic style makes you feel like you’re watching real people in a real place. It’s not a feel-good movie, but it’s a movie that will make you feel something. And if you’re a fan of His Cageness, you won’t be disappointed. Just make sure you have a cold drink and a fan nearby.

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that’s both gross and hilarious, Wetlands is the perfect pick. It’s not your typical romantic comedy, but it’s packed with feminist themes and unconventional storytelling that will keep you entertained from start to finish. Plus, Carla Juri’s performance is a total standout – you’ll be rooting for her character, Helen, the whole way through. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love a good poop joke? Wetlands delivers on all fronts.

It could have romanticized its subjects, portraying them as outlaws and folk heroes. Or it could have gone the way of moral panic. To its credit, [it] does neither of these things – or, rather, it does both, in the most subtle and insightful way possible.

Critics Consensus

Anchored by another tremendous performance in a career full of them, All Is Lost offers a moving, eminently worthwhile testament to Robert Redford’s ability to hold the screen

Audience Consensus

All Is Lost is like watching a game of Jenga, but instead of blocks, it’s Robert Redford’s life on the line. The tension builds and builds until you’re on the edge of your seat, wondering if the whole thing is going to come crashing down. Redford’s performance is a masterclass in screen presence, proving that sometimes less is more. It’s not a feel-good movie, but it’s a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit. Just don’t watch it if you’re planning a sailing trip anytime soon.

Storyline

Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man (Redford) wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Despite his success in patching the breached hull, his mariner’s intuition and a strength that belies his age, the man barely survives the tempest. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.

Audience Consensus

Shaft is one of those movies that you can’t help but love, even if it’s not perfect. Sure, some of the characters are a bit wooden and the plot can be a bit convoluted at times, but who cares when you’ve got Richard Roundtree strutting around like the coolest cat in town? And let’s not forget that theme song – it’s so catchy, you’ll be humming it for days. So if you’re in the mood for some vintage crime drama with a side of blaxploitation, Shaft is the movie for you.

Critics Consensus

As technically brilliant as it is narratively abstract, Upstream Color represents experimental American cinema at its finest — and reaffirms Shane Carruth as a talent to watch

Audience Consensus

Upstream Color is a movie that will leave you feeling like you just went on a wild ride through a wormhole. The visuals are stunning, but be warned, there are some creepy crawlies that might make you squirm. It’s a mix of body horror and mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat, trying to piece together the dream logic of it all. But don’t worry if you don’t get it all on the first go-around, it’s worth a second watch to fully appreciate the spiritual and existential themes woven throughout. Plus, the music is killer. Overall, a wholly original work of art that defies easy classification and is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Critics Consensus

Energetic, self-deprecating performances and enough guffaw-inducing humor make up for the flaws in This Is the End loosely written script

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that’s a little bit ridiculous, a little bit hilarious, and a lot bit stoned, then This Is the End is the perfect pick. Sure, the plot is a bit all over the place and the characters are mostly just playing exaggerated versions of themselves, but that’s what makes it so entertaining. Plus, who doesn’t love watching celebrities poke fun at their own egos and Hollywood culture? So grab some snacks, roll a joint (if that’s your thing), and settle in for a wild ride with This Is the End.

Suddenly, the Rapture hits and the Biblical Apocalypse has begun. Now, Jay and Seth are desperately sheltering in James’ house for rescue along with a few other friends. Together, they must band together to attempt to survive the end of the world, only for Jay to find that they are all too dumb and superficial to do it until they discover the only way out.

Seven Psychopaths delivers sly cinematic commentary while serving up a heaping helping of sharp dialogue and gleeful violence

Audience Consensus

Seven Psychopaths is a wild ride that will have you laughing and cringing at the same time. While some critics found the meta-textual framework to be a bit too much, I found it to be a hilarious addition to the already absurd plot. The performances are top-notch, especially Christopher Walken who steals every scene he’s in. If you’re looking for a dark comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Seven Psychopaths is the perfect choice. Just be prepared for some violence and a lot of laughs.
