The Skeleton Twins (2014)
RT Audience Score: 69%
Awards & Nominations: 4 wins & 12 nominations
Led by powerful performances from Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, The Skeleton Twins effectively mines laughs and tears from family drama
The Skeleton Twins is like that one family reunion where you’re laughing and crying at the same time. Wiig and Hader’s performances are the highlight of the movie, making you forget that you’re watching a film about two dysfunctional siblings. The lip sync dance off to Jefferson Starship’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now is a scene that will have you hitting the replay button. While the ending may leave you wanting more, the journey is worth it. Overall, The Skeleton Twins is a must-watch for anyone who loves a good character study with a side of humor.

Joe (2014)
RT Audience Score: 68%
Awards & Nominations: 2 wins & 3 nominations
Rich in atmosphere and anchored by a powerful performance from Nicolas Cage, Joe is a satisfying return to form for its star — as well as director David Gordon Green
Joe is a movie that will make you feel like you’re in the middle of a Texas summer, sweating and swatting away flies. Nicolas Cage gives a performance that’s both restrained and explosive, and the film’s naturalistic style makes you feel like you’re watching real people in a real place. It’s not a feel-good movie, but it’s a movie that will make you feel something. And if you’re a fan of His Cageness, you won’t be disappointed. Just make sure you have a cold drink and a fan nearby.

While certainly not for the faint of heart, Wetlands transcends its shock value with sweetness, heart, and subversive wit

It’s not your typical romantic comedy, but it’s packed with feminist themes and unconventional storytelling that will keep you entertained from start to finish. Plus, Carla Juri’s performance is a total standout – you’ll be rooting for her character, Helen, the whole way through. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love a good poop joke? Anchored by another tremendous performance in a career full of them, All Is Lost offers a moving, eminently worthwhile testament to Robert Redford’s ability to hold the screen
All Is Lost is like watching a game of Jenga, but instead of blocks, it’s Robert Redford’s life on the line. The tension builds and builds until you’re on the edge of your seat, wondering if the whole thing is going to come crashing down. Redford’s performance is a masterclass in screen presence, proving that sometimes less is more. It’s not a feel-good movie, but it’s a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit. Gone With The Twins…
Plot
Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man (Redford) wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Despite his success in patching the breached hull, his mariner’s intuition and a strength that belies his age, the man barely survives the tempest. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.

This is the man that would risk his neck for his brother, man. Can you dig it
Shaft is one of those movies that you can’t help but love, even if it’s not perfect. Sure, some of the characters are a bit wooden and the plot can be a bit convoluted at times, but who cares when you’ve got Richard Roundtree strutting around like the coolest cat in town? And let’s not forget that theme song – it’s so catchy, you’ll be humming it for days. So if you’re in the mood for some vintage crime drama with a side of blaxploitation, Shaft is the movie for you.

As technically brilliant as it is narratively abstract, Upstream Color represents experimental American cinema at its finest — and reaffirms Shane Carruth as a talent to watch
Upstream Color is a movie that will leave you feeling like you just went on a wild ride through a wormhole. The visuals are stunning, but be warned, there are some creepy crawlies that might make you squirm. It’s a mix of body horror and mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat, trying to piece together the dream logic of it all. But don’t worry if you don’t get it all on the first go-around, it’s worth a second watch to fully appreciate the spiritual and existential themes woven throughout. Plus, the music is killer. Overall, a wholly original work of art that defies easy classification and is sure to leave a lasting impression.

If you’re looking for a movie that’s a little bit ridiculous, a little bit hilarious, and a lot bit stoned, then This Is the End is the perfect pick. The brilliant, original four-hankie dystopian family drama from New Orleans newcomer Benh Zeitlin far surpassed any expectations for a scruffy $1.5 million effort from an unknown film collective…

Beasts of the Southern Wild, a deliciously dreamy tale about a fictional Bayou community in the backwaters of Louisiana, does not so much jump off the screen as float effortlessly off it.

What is also extraordinary is that almost all the people we see are actors. So this is not a documentary but a moving enactment by people who are themselves moved.

“Beasts of the Southern Wild” is a vibrant, moving testament to the world’s interconnectedness. It is also one of cinema’s most difficult, hardest-won coming-of-age stories, which makes that even more impressive.

Plot
Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in the Bathtub, a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink’s tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he’s no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack, temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink’s health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.
