Transit (2019)
RT Audience Score: 64%
Awards & Nominations: 9 wins & 27 nominations
Transit lives up to its title with a challenging drama that captures characters – and puts the audience – in a state of flux and exerts an unsettling pull
Transit is like a game of cat and mouse, but instead of a cat, it’s the Nazis and instead of a mouse, it’s a bunch of refugees trying to escape. It’s a thrilling ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering who will make it out alive. Plus, Franz Rogowski’s performance is so captivating, you’ll forget you’re watching a movie and feel like you’re right there with him. Don’t miss this one!

Plot
German troops are fast approaching Paris. Georg, a German refugee, escapes to Marseille in the nick of time. In his luggage, he carries the documents of an author, Weidel, who has taken his own life in fear of his persecutors. Those documents include a manuscript, letters and visa assurance from the Mexican embassy. Everything changes when Georg falls in love with the mysterious Marie. Is it devotion or calculation that has led her to share her life with a doctor, Richard, before journeying on in search of her husband? He’s said to have surfaced in Marseille in possession of a Mexican visa for him and his wife.

Intimate Strangers is Hitchcockian noir with a Gallic twist: Rather than simply imitating the genre’s form, director/screenwriter Patrice Leconte delves into the underlying psychological drama
Intimate Strangers is like a game of poker where you’re not sure if you’re holding a winning hand or not. The movie takes you on a mysterious journey that keeps you guessing until the very end. The chemistry between the leads may not be explosive, but it’s definitely intriguing. It’s a movie that’s worth a watch, especially if you’re a fan of French cinema. Just don’t expect to leave the theater with all the answers.

The Square may not quite live up to the modern noir classics that inspired it, but with twists and tension to spare, it comes admirably close
The Square” is a movie that will make you feel good about feeling bad, or at least watching others do so. It’s a well-executed and entertaining descent into a black-comic hell that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The filmmakers did an admirable job with this kind of crime film, and it’s Australian for noir, mate. The atmosphere is so charged that even the insidious way a man makes an appointment to get his hair cut seems fraught with innuendo and peril. Things go from bad to worse to downright disastrous in this enthralling Australian import. It’s a Sisyphusian tale about idealists devoting their lives to bringing about change, and it’s definitely worth a watch.

A Ghost Story deftly manages its ambitious themes through an inventive, artful, and ultimately poignant exploration of love and loss
A Ghost Story is a film that will make you feel like you’re watching paint dry, but in a good way. It’s slow, it’s deliberate, and it’s hauntingly beautiful. Sure, some people might walk out of the theater, but those who stick around will be rewarded with a profound meditation on loss and the passage of time. And let’s not forget about Casey Affleck’s performance, which is so good that he manages to convey emotion even while wearing a sheet over his head. Overall, A Ghost Story is a must-see for anyone who’s looking for a film that’s both unconventional and deeply moving.

Plot
Resonating with vibrant memories and silent echoes of a shared life, the old house is somehow connected to “C”, a sensitive composer who is hesitant of leaving it, while his loving wife “M”, on the other hand, is keen on moving out, having an indecipherable but grim premonition of danger. Sadly, disaster soon strikes, and C’s untethered spectre which detaches from the lifeless body, rises from the mortician’s table, and in a swift decision, decides to linger in this dimension to faithfully follow the grieving M back to the old house. As silent as a shadow and as invisible as the air, C’s unappeasable phantom observes M’s denial and depression gradually turn to acceptance and even hope, as time unravels, moving forward through the decades. In this earth, man struggles to leave his legacy behind. Is this the way to immortality?

Florence Foster Jenkins makes poignant, crowd-pleasing dramedy out of its stranger-than-fiction tale — and does its subject justice with a reliably terrific turn from star Meryl Streep
Florence Foster Jenkins is a hilarious and heartwarming film that showcases Meryl Streep’s incredible talent. Despite her character’s terrible singing, Streep manages to make her performance sound almost believable. The supporting cast is also fantastic, with Hugh Grant delivering a standout performance as Florence’s devoted husband. The film strikes a perfect balance between comedy and drama, making it a must-see for anyone who loves a good laugh and a good cry. Overall, Florence Foster Jenkins is a delightful and entertaining movie that will leave you feeling uplifted and inspired.

This absorbing but wince-inducing documentary is a cautionary tale about the costs of hubris in the world of indie film

Countdown to Zero is more genuinely frightening than many horror movies — and more soberly enlightening than the average documentary
Countdown to Zero is like a horror movie, but instead of a masked killer, it’s the threat of nuclear war that’s lurking around every corner. The film does a great job of reminding us that just because we don’t hear about it in the news every day, the danger is still very real. It’s a sobering reminder that we need to work together to prevent a catastrophic event that could change the world as we know it. Plus, it’s got some pretty cool graphics and animations to keep you engaged.

We’ve gone backwards rather than forwards. To watch a film such as this is to shudder all over again.

The film’s most sobering fact: any world leader has a maximum of 10 seconds to decide to retaliate in the event of a nuclear attack.

Countdown to Zero leaves you uneasy enough about the threat from nukes, but also amazed that to date, at least, no blunder has ended in annihilation.
