Critics Consensus

The War of the Worlds, a 1953 George Pal production, is a cinematic masterpiece that has stood the test of time. The film’s special effects, which were groundbreaking for their time, still manage to captivate audiences today. The movie’s portrayal of the Martian invasion is less about humanity fighting aliens and more about the aliens as an unstoppable force of nature. The film’s bleakness is surprisingly effective, and the vibrant color scheme and aural assaults all rate an A+. The filmmakers’ optimism and favoring of luck lend to an unforgettable resolution, making this movie a must-see for any science-fiction fan.

As the perfect crystallization of 50s ideology the film would be fascinating enough, but the special effects in this 1953 George Pal production also achieve a kind of dark, burnished apocalyptic beauty.

War of the Worlds is a socko science-fiction feature, as fearsome as a film as was the Orson Welles 1938 radio interpretation of the H.G. Wells novel.

The film deviates quite a bit from the novel, but the fear of the mysterious being is still present, and at the time, was a hit with audiences thanks to some special effects that made it all look too real.

This isn’t a “humanity fights aliens” movie; it’s an “aliens as natural disaster” movie. The aliens are less an invading threat than an unstoppable force majeure.

If The War of the Worlds had had an effective human core, one that put a face on its epic of death and destruction, it might very well have reached a pinnacle of true greatness.

As alien invasion sagas go, this is as good as they get –fast-paced, filled with still-impressive visual effects presented in all their Technicolor glory and including a number of genuinely suspenseful moments that continue to pack a punch.

Critics Consensus

Road to Morocco is a lighthearted and nonsensical film that showcases the perfect balance between sophistication and simplicity. The chemistry between Hope and Crosby may not be sparkling for some, but the fantastical feats of stupidity and playful sabotage make up for it. The film is a prime example of the Road-movie formula at its best, before it descended into self-parody. The low-effort, cartoonish variety of the film’s nonsensical moments may not be memorable, but they are still fun to watch. With Bing, Bob, Dottie, a talking camel, and great songs, Road to Morocco is a Republican zany that even Democrats can enjoy.

Audience Consensus

Road to Morocco is a classic comedy that still holds up today, even after 60 years. The chemistry between Hope and Crosby may not have been sparkling for some, but their nonsensical and playful sabotage is always a fun ride. Plus, who can forget the talking camel and great songs? It’s more Republican zany than Democrat zany, but that doesn’t stop it from being a lighthearted and sophisticated movie that hits all the right notes. So hop on board and enjoy the journey to Morocco!

Sarah Bennett’s parents were murdered by a killer known as “The Executioner” 30 years ago. Now, she returns to the quiet community of Waterbury, where the killings occurred, to start over with her husband Dylan, but upon arriving they discover that things haven’t changed much. Sarah quickly finds herself at the center of a series of murders that revolve around the seven deadly sins, which appear to be the work of “The Executioner.” But the original killer who went by that name, Tom Winston, is in prison so it can’t be him. That means somebody else is behind the mask this time around, and the perp’s true identity must be discovered to stop this latest string of murders. As long-buried secrets begin to surface, everybody around Sarah is a suspect — or a victim.
