Critics Consensus

Certain Women further demonstrates writer-director Kelly Reichardt’s gift for telling the stories of ordinary people with uncommon empathy and skill

Audience Consensus

Certain Women is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. But in this case, you’re guaranteed to get a beautifully crafted film that tells the stories of ordinary people longing for connection and meaning. The film’s whispers are more penetrating than most film’s shouts, and Reichardt’s direction is wonderfully at odds with our expectations for the medium. While the middle section may be a bit of a slog, the accumulation of effect in the film will leave you swept up with emotion. It’s a Montana-set meditation that will make you feel like you’re crossing paths with strangers in real life, mulling over small details and wondering what remained unsaid.

Magic Mike’s sensitive direction, smart screenplay, and strong performances allow audiences to have their beefcake and eat it too

Audience Consensus

Magic Mike is a movie that’s worth seeing, but also not worth seeing, but also worth seeing. Confused? So was I. But if you’re looking for some blotched, stylish pseudo-realism, then this movie might be for you. Just don’t expect too much from the plot. The dancing scenes are pretty good though, and Matthew McConaughey steals the show. Overall, it’s a fun movie about fake people that doesn’t feel fake. Just don’t expect to be blown away by the choreography.

Storyline

It’s been three years since Tampa based Mike Lane transitioned from the life of a stripper – his stage name being Magic Mike – to his dream of starting his own custom furniture business, those three years mixed in terms of the goods and bads for him personally. His ex-troupe, the Kings of Tampa, minus who was their boss, Dallas, stop off in Tampa from their current home base in Miami on a road trip to a stripper convention in Myrtle Beach. As the remaining troupe members are nearing the end of their stripping lives, they, like Mike, who are at an advanced age beyond that of most strippers, they see this convention as their final hurrah in this life. Mike decides to join his old friends on the road trip to this send off. The current troupe members start to have their own dreams about their futures in being with Mike, while Mike has his own envy of his friends in his current life not being everything he hoped it would be. But especially without Dallas at the helm, the troupe members are feeling a bit lost, with Mike trying to inspire them, which he may or may not be able to do. As they make several stops along the way, they encounter many groups of women, which may demonstrate whether their thoughts about what to do at the convention is a good idea in if they still have what it takes. Beyond these encounters with women, the trip itself hits its bumps, with Mike needing to call in some favors and mend some bridges even to make it to Myrtle Beach, it not certain if those at the other end will accept Mike’s pleas for help or his apologies.

Audience Consensus

The Forbidden Room is like a fever dream that you can’t quite shake off. It’s a mishmash of vintage cinematic styles that somehow work together to create a visually stunning and utterly bizarre experience. It’s the kind of movie that you’ll either love or hate, but you won’t be able to deny its unique charm. Maddin’s passion for the art of cinema is evident in every frame, and it’s infectious. So, if you’re in the mood for something a little bit weird and a lot of fun, give The Forbidden Room a try. Just don’t expect to make sense of it all.

If you’re looking for a movie that will make you want to cuddle up with a warm blanket and a cup of hot cocoa, The Grey is not it. But if you’re in the mood for a thrilling survival story that will have you on the edge of your seat, then this is the movie for you. Liam Neeson delivers a stubbornly committed performance as he faces off against wolves, the cold, and some questionable writing choices. But despite its flaws, The Grey is a cut above your standard action flick, with surprising depth and a refreshing change of pace from the usual urban settings. Just don’t forget to bring a coat.

Critics Consensus

A clever parody of cop-buddy action-comedies, The Other Guys delivers several impressive action set pieces and lots of big laughs, thanks to the assured comic chemistry between Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg

Audience Consensus

The Other Guys” is the kind of movie that will have you laughing so hard, you’ll forget about all your problems. Critics have called it the funniest movie of the year, and I have to agree. The jokes are cleverly hidden in the background, and the over-the-top gags will have you in stitches. Plus, who doesn’t love a good buddy cop movie? Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg make the perfect duo, and their chemistry is undeniable. If you’re looking for a movie that will make you forget about the real world for a while, “The Other Guys” is the perfect choice.

Critics Consensus

Befitting its unorthodox origins, this Bad Lieutenant benefits from Werner Herzog’s typically fearless direction and a delightfully unhinged Nicolas Cage in the title role

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a wild ride, hop on board with Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Nicolas Cage’s performance is so over-the-top that it’s almost endearing, and Werner Herzog’s direction keeps the energy high throughout. Sure, the plot may not always make sense, but who cares when you’re having this much fun? It’s a movie that’s good to be bad with, and you won’t regret taking the trip.

Critics Consensus

Kids will be entertained by the straightforward plot and cute animals, and adults will be charmed by how quiet and humble the production is, a fine translation of E.B. White’s genteel prose

Audience Consensus

Charlotte’s Web is a classic tale that has been adapted into a live-action film, and while it may not be perfect, it’s still a fun and heartwarming movie. The cast is great, especially Dakota Fanning as Fern, and the animals are adorable. Sure, some of the voices may be hard to identify, but that just adds to the fun. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love a cute liddle piggy? Overall, Charlotte’s Web is a great family film that teaches important lessons about friendship, love, and loss, and it’s definitely worth a watch.

Critics Consensus

The final film by the great Robert Altman, A Prairie Home Companion, the big screen adaptation of Garrison Keillor’s radio broadcast showcases plenty of the director’s strengths: it’s got a gigantic cast and plenty of quirky acting and dialogue

Audience Consensus

A Prairie Home Companion is like a warm hug from your favorite grandparent – it’s comforting, familiar, and full of heart. The cast of talented performers bring the whimsical world of Garrison Keillor’s radio show to life, and Meryl Streep’s country crooning is a standout. Sure, there’s not much of a plot, but who needs one when you’re having this much fun? It’s a celebration of creativity, community, and the joy of making art with the people you love. So sit back, relax, and let A Prairie Home Companion transport you to a simpler time where the corny jokes are aplenty and the music is always playing.

Storyline

A final live variety show broadcast via radio becomes a metaphor for the natural order of life. A concept and script by Garrison Keilor uses every natural and technical element of working with a tight and close ensemble producing a weekly show to sooth us and guide us through the natural but difficult transitions of aging, becoming less relevant and then dying as new, young life develops and strengthens during our final “performances.” This is a rare film for it’s remarkable cast and crew and one wonders how the great Robert Altman was able to gather them all at the same place and time to shoot this film.

Audience Consensus

The Aristocrats is a documentary that’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re looking for a good laugh and a glimpse into the minds of comedians, this is the film for you. It’s like a masterclass in comedy, with each comedian putting their own spin on “the dirtiest joke in the world.” And let’s be real, who doesn’t love a good poop joke? Overall, it’s a hilarious and insightful film that’s definitely worth a watch.

A comedy/ drama for grown-ups, with fine performances by Joan Allen and Kevin Costner

Audience Consensus

The Upside of Anger” is a movie that’s worth watching, according to the critics. They say it’s intelligent, funny, and touching, with quality performances. Some even call it a superior suburban chick flick. But don’t take their word for it – if you’re in the mood for a movie that’s both door-slamming and watchable, give it a try. Just don’t expect it to be as profound as it thinks it is. And if you’re really into it, imagine it as a two-hour television pilot – it might just be positively gangbusters.

While beautifully cast and acted, this focuses on its comic strengths to the detriment of the drama, creating an unbalanced tone and leading to self-conscious attempts at serious observation. A pleasant watch, but nowhere near as profound as it thinks it

A late twist renders all this sturm und drang a tad redundant, but until then anger keeps it alive.

Upside is better-than-average as a mid-budget suburban film dramedy but positively gangbusters if you imagine it as a two-hour television pilot.
