Strange World (2022)
RT Audience Score: 67%
Awards & Nominations: NA
Strange World is a Disney milestone in terms of representation — but as a storytelling experience, this dazzlingly animated adventure offers little audiences haven’t already seen.
It’s lovely to look at and the story has its moments, but all in all, Strange World falls short of Disney’s finest.

Sundown’s emotionally muted wavelength may be difficult for some viewers to tune into, but it’s enlivened by Tim Roth’s strong central performance.
Sundown is the kind of movie that makes you feel like you’re on a rollercoaster ride, but instead of screaming, you’re just silently holding on for dear life. Tim Roth’s performance is so captivating that you can’t help but be drawn into his character’s world, even if you don’t quite understand it. And while the plot may be a bit confusing at times, it’s worth it just to see Roth in action. So buckle up and get ready for a wild ride with Sundown.

A strikingly assured debut for writer-director Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Lost Daughter unites a brilliant cast in service of a daringly ambitious story.
The Lost Daughter” is a film that will make you question your life choices, but also make you jump at the sight of rotting fruit. Olivia Colman delivers a fantastic performance, capturing the emotional turmoil of her character with just a simple expression. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s direction is audacious and intricate, weaving the ins and outs of motherhood through the psychology of a complex character. However, some critics found the film unfailingly grim, while others thought it provoked indifference. But hey, at least we can all agree that it’s not every day you get scared by a piece of fruit.

Relic ratchets up its slowly building tension in an expertly crafted atmosphere of dread, adding up to an outstanding feature debut for director/co-writer Natalie Erika James
Relic” is the kind of movie that will make you want to sleep with the lights on for a week. It’s a haunting tale of a woman with Alzheimer’s who becomes lost in her own home, and the slow creep of dread will have you on the edge of your seat. The imagery is grotesque, but the twists are tender, and the cast is on sharp form. It’s not your standard haunted house flick, but it’s far more astute and powerful. Don’t watch it alone, unless you want to be haunted for life.

Plot
When elderly mother Edna inexplicably vanishes, her daughter Kay and granddaughter Sam rush to their family’s decaying country home, finding clues of her increasing dementia scattered around the house in her absence. After Edna returns just as mysteriously as she disappeared, Kay’s concern that her mother seems unwilling or unable to say where she’s been clashes with Sam’s unabashed enthusiasm to have her grandma back. As Edna’s behavior turns increasingly volatile, both begin to sense that an insidious presence in the house might be taking control of her. With RELIC, first-time writer/director Natalie Erika James crafts an unforgettable new spin on the haunted-house movie.

La princesse de Montpensier (The Princess of Montpensier) (2011)
RT Audience Score: 54%
Awards & Nominations: 2 wins & 9 nominations
Bertrand Tavernier’s The Princess of Montpensier is a film that manages to balance the grandeur of an epic with the intimacy of a love story. The film’s backdrop of war and political power struggles provides ample action, but it is the complex characters and their shifting allegiances that truly captivate. Tavernier’s direction is confident and energetic, and the rousing performances from the cast make the two-hour-plus runtime fly by. This is a thoroughly modern-seeming period film that doesn’t rely on contemporary parallels to be compelling. It’s part bodice-ripper, part patrician soap opera, and part romantic tragedy, but ultimately it’s a film that proves that period romance is by no means a dead genre.
The Princess of Montpensier is like a medieval soap opera, complete with love triangles, political intrigue, and plenty of sword fights. It’s the kind of movie that makes you glad you weren’t born in the 16th century, but also makes you wish you could wear a fancy dress and attend a ball. The acting is solid, the scenery is gorgeous, and the story is engaging enough to keep you interested. Plus, who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned battle scene? Overall, it’s a fun and entertaining movie that’s worth a watch.

Plot
Bertrand Tavernier is in top form with this gripping, superbly mounted drama set against the savage Catholic/Protestant wars that ripped France apart in the 16th century. Based on a novel by the celebrated Mme de Lafayette, the action centers on the love of Marie de Mezières for her dashing cousin Henri de Guise, thwarted when her father’s political ambitions force her into marriage with the well-connected Philippe de Montpensier, whom she has never met. When Philippe is called away to fight, she is left in the care of Count de Chabannes, an aging nobleman with a disdain for warfare, and soon becomes exposed to the sexual and political intrigues of court.

Paranormal Activity is the kind of movie that will make you want to sleep with the lights on for a week. It’s like a rollercoaster ride that you can’t get off of, and even when you know the scares are coming, they still manage to make you jump out of your seat. The movie is slow to start, but once it gets going, it’s a non-stop thrill ride that will leave you terrified and begging for more. The acting is naturalistic, and the small-scale project has an amazingly heightened effect. If you’re looking for a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat, Paranormal Activity is definitely worth checking out. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you!

it was awesome in the way that it was extremely, horrendously and torturously stressful… worth it.

[Paranormal Activity] is way more scary than Blair Witch because it takes the old conceit of things that go bump into the night, and brings it slyly into a well-to-do, middle class suburb.

This is a scarily well-made scary little film, although it certainly isn’t flawless… But the acting is supremely naturalistic and, for such a small-scale project, it does have an amazingly heightened effect.

Backseat Mafia
Enter the cinema expecting a clever little movie, with some neat ideas and pretty decent performances and, if you let it, Paranormal Activity will give you a pretty uncomfortable nights sleep.

NME
It’s one thing to create a movie that functions as good narrative storytelling, but it’s another to create that movie knowing exactly how an audience is going to react to stimuli.

The NitPic
Intense, disturbing and with an ending that will leave even the most resolute disbeliever sleeping with the light on, it’s as much an experience as it is a piece of entertainment.

Roll Credits
The movie gets enormous mileage out of small, barely noticeable details-a door opening by itself, covers stirred by a breeze from nowhere, a chandelier swinging.

Its scares are undeniably effective, but the overall product lacks a real hook to pull in the audience.

Plot
After a young, middle class couple moves into a suburban ‘starter’ tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.
Trivia
Goofs / Tidbits
