Critics Consensus

While it’s no slam dunk, Space Jam’s silly, Looney Toons-laden slapstick and vivid animation will leave younger viewers satisfied — though accompanying adults may be more annoyed than entertained

Audience Consensus

Space Jam is the ultimate basketball movie that combines the best of both worlds: live-action and animation. Critics may say it’s a product made for selling toys, but who cares when you have Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes teaming up to save the world from aliens? Plus, Bill Murray makes a hilarious cameo that’s worth the watch alone. It may not be a cinematic masterpiece, but it’s a cult classic that defines a generation. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the ride.

Critics Consensus

A frustratingly uneven all-star disaster drama, Outbreak ultimately proves only mildly contagious and leaves few lasting side effects

Audience Consensus

Outbreak is the kind of movie that makes you want to wear a hazmat suit to the grocery store. But don’t worry, you won’t be too scared to laugh at the cheesy one-liners and over-the-top action scenes. It’s like a rollercoaster ride, except instead of screaming because you’re scared, you’re screaming because you’re having a blast. Just make sure to bring some hand sanitizer with you to the theater.

Critics Consensus

Doc Hollywood isn’t particularly graceful in its attempt to put a ’90s spin on its Capraesque formula, but a light touch and a charming cast make its flaws easy to forgive

Audience Consensus

Doc Hollywood” is like a classic rom-com that you can’t help but love, even if it’s a bit cheesy. The chemistry between Fox and Warner is predictable but still enjoyable to watch. It’s a feel-good movie that celebrates the simple pleasures of life, and while it may not be groundbreaking, it’s a fun ride getting there. Plus, who doesn’t love Michael J. Fox playing a charming doctor? It’s like Alex P. Keaton grew up and got a medical degree. Overall, “Doc Hollywood” is a lobotomy-free Frank Capra-esque film that will leave you with a smile on your face.

Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey has the same stars — and cheerfully wacky sense of humor — as its predecessor, but they prove a far less effective combination the second time around

Audience Consensus

Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey is a wild ride that’s perfect for fans of the franchise. While some critics may have found it lacking, I found it to be a hilarious and inventive sequel that kept me entertained from start to finish. The addition of Death as a character was a stroke of genius, and William Sadler’s performance steals the show. Sure, it may not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for a fun and nonsensical journey, this movie is definitely worth a watch.

The world of our distant future is a veritable utopia, thanks to the lyrics of two simple-minded 20th Century rock and rollers, Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted “Theodore” Logan. However, a would-be conquerer threatens to throw history off-track by sending “most non-non-heinous” evil robot Bill and Teds back to kill their good counterparts. Finding themselves dead, the boys must outwit the Grim Reaper and traverse Heaven and Hell to return to the land of the living, rescue their “babes” and have a “most triumphant” concert at the all-important Battle of the Bands.

Critics Consensus

Dick Tracy is stylish, unique, and an undeniable technical triumph, but it ultimately struggles to rise above its two-dimensional artificiality

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that’s visually stunning but lacking in substance, then Dick Tracy is the perfect film for you. It’s got all the style and pizzazz of a comic book come to life, but unfortunately, the plot falls a bit flat. Still, it’s worth a watch just to see Warren Beatty’s vision of this classic character, and to appreciate the artistry that went into creating such a vibrant world. Plus, Madonna’s performance as Breathless Mahoney is a real highlight – she’s the perfect femme fatale to keep you on the edge of your seat. Overall, Dick Tracy is a fun and flashy ride that’s sure to entertain, even if it doesn’t quite live up to its potential.

Critics Consensus

Whether Road House is simply bad or so bad it’s good depends largely on the audience’s fondness for Swayze — and tolerance for violently cheesy action

Audience Consensus

Road House is the kind of movie that’s so bad, it’s good. It’s like a train wreck that you can’t look away from, except instead of a train, it’s Patrick Swayze’s mullet. The violence is intense, the villains are hiss-able, and the camaraderie between the leads is knockabout. Plus, it’s a reminder of a whole genre of film that has dried up, like a bar without a bouncer. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the ride. Just don’t forget to bring your Peruvian marching powder.

With such a reputation, Dalton is summoned in a small town in Missouri to clean up the sleazy bar called The Double Deuce from the troublemakers who terrorize the customers, without knowing, however, that the villainous local entrepreneur, Brad Wesley, wants things to remain unchanged. As Dalton cleans up the nightclub, and with it, the town from Wesley’s hired goons, a deep wound from a knife will inspire a passionate affair with local Dr. Elizabeth “Doc” Clay. Now, the corrupt Wesley has enough reasons to take Dalton out of the way, nevertheless, the bouncer has the final say.

Critics Consensus

This truncated adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi masterwork is too dry to work as grand entertainment, but David Lynch’s flair for the surreal gives it some spice

Audience Consensus

Dune is like a futuristic fever dream that you can’t quite shake off. It’s a mishmash of confusing plotlines, bizarre rituals, and over-the-top special effects that somehow manage to be both dazzling and headache-inducing. But hey, at least the music is good, right? If you’re a die-hard fan of the book, you might find something to love here, but for the rest of us, it’s a bit of a slog. Still, there’s something undeniably fascinating about this mess of a movie, and it’s definitely worth a watch if you’re in the mood for something weird and wild.

No matter how hard it tries to make Herbert understandable to those who find the saga resistible, or even to make Dune hang together for devoted fans, there is an overwhelming sense that this is familiar cinematic territory.

Dune 1984 is a muddling, dull feudal drama dressed up in an elaborate sci-fi costume. The film tries desperately to elevate the basic messianic archetype with excess futurism in hopes to disguise its banal core.

Critics Consensus

The Twilight Zone: The Movie suffers from the typical anthology-film highs and lows; thankfully, the former outnumber the latter

Audience Consensus

Twilight Zone: The Movie is like trying to mix oil and water, it just doesn’t work. The four short stories are unbalanced and the effort put in by each director is lacking. However, Joe Dante’s segment stands out as the only one that doesn’t feel like a rehash of the original series. Overall, it’s a film that’s stuck in the past and fails to capture the spirit of the iconic TV show. Stick to the original series and leave this movie in the fifth dimension.

TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE

Twilight Zone: The Movie fails because it tries to blend the spirit of the TV show into a medium whose spirit has evolved away from subtle storytelling. The result is like trying to merge a Wagner opera with a Debussy sonata.

Critics Consensus

Heaven’s Gate contains too many ideas and striking spectacle to be a disaster, but this western buckles under the weight of its own sprawl

Audience Consensus

Heaven’s Gate is like that one friend who always talks too much and takes forever to get to the point. Sure, there are some cool moments and the visuals are pretty, but did we really need all that political commentary and padding? It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack, except the needle is a good movie and the haystack is this bloated Western. At least there’s some nudity and sexual violence to keep things interesting, right? Overall, it’s a bold and engrossing saga, but maybe next time, let’s try to keep it a little more concise.

Storyline

In 1890 Wyoming, James Averill is the Sherriff of Johnson County, which is largely inhabited by foreign immigrants. The wealthy cattle owners view the immigrant farmers as a nuisance and hindrance to them enlarging their own land. The cattlemen’s association, the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, effectively declares war on the immigrant farmers and gets the state government’s blessing. They assemble an army of guns-for-hire and, backed by the U.S. Cavalry, set out to rid the state of the immigrants. James Averill’s heart is with the immigrants, but he doesn’t think they have a chance of winning the inevitable war.
