    Joseph L. Mankiewicz was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for his Academy Award-winning films All About Eve (1950) and A Letter to Three Wives (1949). He was also nominated for five other Academy Awards for his work on films such as The Barefoot Contessa (1954) and Guys and Dolls (1955). Mankiewicz was known for his witty dialogue and his ability to bring out the best in his actors. He was also a mentor to many of the great directors of the 1950s and 1960s, including Billy Wilder and John Huston.
