Critics Consensus

Wildlife’s portrait of a family in crisis is beautifully composed by director Paul Dano — and brought brilliantly to life by a career-best performance from Carey Mulligan

Audience Consensus

Wildlife” is a movie that sneaks up on you like a ninja in the night. It’s a quiet film that doesn’t move like other movies, but that’s what makes it so special. The actors perform in scenes of such complexity and unconstrained emotion that it would be impossible to reduce their characters to mere tropes. And let’s not forget about the jittery physicality of Mulligan’s portrayal, which is frequently surprising. Overall, “Wildlife” is a coming-of-age story that showcases the flaws of an entire family, without pointing fingers or gender bias. It’s honest, blunt, and much more novelistic in its approach. So, if you’re looking for a movie that will make you feel all the feels, “Wildlife” is the one for you.

There’s no shaking the feeling that this sort of study of all-American repression has been done to death.

Few could play a character so ordinary with as much empathy as Oxenbould brings to the role. He’s one to watch, here and in the future.

It’s a story of its time, unfolding pre-women’s lib, and Jeanette feels an inner frustration she can’t even give voice to. But as “Wildlife” quietly rages, Mulligan lets it be felt.

“Wildlife” is the kind of movie whose low-key hush could get lost in all the buzz over the big-name, holiday-season releases. Sometimes, though, it’s the quiet ones who make the most noise.

Dano’s control throughout Wildlife does not apply to his actors, who perform in scenes of such complexity and unconstrained emotion that it would be impossible to reduce their characters to mere tropes.

Wildlife does an effective job of dramatizing the conflict between the heavily promoted notion that America … is the land of unlimited opportunity and universal prosperity, and the actual conditions …for the mass of the population.

By avoiding gender bias or pointing fingers, Wildlife showcases the coming-of-age of the whole family, humbly admitting that everyone is flawed.
