White Material (2010)
RT Audience Score: 64%
Awards & Nominations: 1 win & 10 nominations
Isabelle Huppert is an immoveable object surrounded by unstoppable forces in White Material, an incendiary character study and political thriller that showcases director Claire Denis’ expertise in ratcheting tension
White Material is a movie that will make you think, but not necessarily care. It’s like that one friend who always has something interesting to say, but you’re not sure if you actually want to hang out with them. Claire Denis’ direction is unflinching and the story is absorbing, but it’s definitely not a feel-good movie. If you’re in the mood for something heady and substantial, give it a watch. Just don’t expect to be laughing your head off.

Deep Focus Review
Granted, movies about white privilege are rarely fun, and there’s no reason they should be, but [Claire] Denis is rarely so cynical.

Seattle Film Blog
White Material is not her most abstract film yet Denis still manages to keep the film absorbing and enigmatic without ever being didactic or boring. It’s definitely headier and feels more substantial than her other works.

Floating World
At first the story seems interesting to me and I even go so far as to pretend that it’s very provocative, but I immediately admit that it lacks tension and sharpness in a matter as difficult as the one that arises. [Full review in Spanish]
