Triangle of Sadness (2022)
RT Audience Score: 73%
Awards & Nominations: 3 Oscars
20 wins & 67 nominations
Triangle of Sadness lacks the sharp edges of Östlund’s earlier work, but this blackly humorous swipe at the obscenely affluent has its own rewards.
With an intriguing premise held back by uneven execution, Triangle of Sadness has some sharp points as well as some lopsided angles.

There is scarcely a gag or scenario that isn’t telegraphed and obvious, and yet it’s seemingly just as satisfied with its own cleverness as its targets are with their over-pampered, empty lives.

There’s great heady stuff going on and also really weird fun in this film too.

Yes, the metaphor can seem very on-the-nose: the super rich, in this economic climate especially, are obscene and repulsive! But it’s a film of great subtlety (really) and benefits from multiple viewings.

The relish of the attack, the invention of the imminent mortifications and the cool precision of Östlund’s filmmaking rescues Triangle of Sadness.

Östlund is shooting fish in a barrel here, but if his targets are glaring, there’s at least some fun to be had along the way.

The film is essentially Ostlund… breezing by feminism and the folly of societal facades, and iterating some obvious assertions about humanity’s failure to find the utopian mean between sharing what you earn and earning what you share.

In the new film, reflecting the force of processes too obvious to be ignored, Östlund has expanded his scope. The English-language film is uneven, but its skewering of capitalism is certainly welcome.

An incisive and insightful film that puts its finger on the wound of the capitalist system. [Full review in Spanish]

It’s a raft that thinks it’s a cruise ship. It floats, but it doesn’t hold nearly as much as it thinks it does.

Triangle of Sadness is a black comedy whose satirical view of the uber-rich leads to some true laugh out loud moments. The film takes a while to get going… but the film’s final act is well worth the wait.

“Triangle of Sadness” completes Östlund’s triptych about men and money, but with a third act that feels like a minor deflation, dialing down the film’s absurdities in favor of more literal and didactic extrications.

Plot
After Fashion Week, influencers Carl and Yaya are invited on a yacht for a luxury cruise. While the crew takes great care of the vacationers, the captain refuses to leave his cabin as the famous gala dinner approaches. Events take an unexpected turn and the balance of power is reversed when a storm rises and endangers the comfort of passengers.
Trivia
Goofs / Tidbits
First time we see Therese, she has right sided hemiplegia and aphasia both consistent with a left brain infarct. When she is pulled to shore, her hemiplegia switches sides and for the rest of the movie she has left hemiplegia.
