Critics Consensus

Drawing on another terrific performance from Honor Swinton Byrne, The Souvenir Part II continues its story with profound emotional complexity and elegant storytelling.

Audience Consensus

The Souvenir Part II is like the sequel we never knew we needed. It’s a coming-of-age story that’s deeper, funnier, and more imaginative than its predecessor. It’s like The Godfather Part II of posh misery, but with warmth where a freezer used to be. The film explores the emotional wreckage left behind from the original, but with a wider scope and smoother execution. It’s a masterful investigation of art’s ability to heal and make us understand ourselves a little better. And if there were to be The Souvenir Part III: Rosalind and James Walk Their Springer Spaniels, count me in!

The Souvenir Part II is undeniably the work of a talented director though this episode of the autobiography is less interesting than its predecessor.

This is a creative coming-of-age story – a portrait of the artist as a young woman discovering her own voice.

Joanna Hogg delivers an object lesson in how to deliver a follow-up: deeper, funnier, more imaginative than its predecessor, The Souvenir Part II is a filmmaker working at the peak of her powers.

Think of it as The Godfather Part II of posh misery, a film built upon the emotional wreckage left behind from the original, yet wider in scope, smoother in execution, and with warmth where a freezer used to be.

It is painfully touching. You can’t tear your eyes from them. If there were to be The Souvenir Part III: Rosalind and James Walk Their Springer Spaniels, I would be up for that.

Hogg has created her own universe and explored it with relentless vigour. Few final shots have so satisfactorily summed up such a magnum opus.

Cinema isn’t short on memoirs, many of them wonderful, but The Souvenir and its just-as-phenomenal sequel are in a bold and brilliant realm all of their own.

A less literal film than the first one, Hogg eventually strides headlong into something between David Lynch and Charlie Kaufman-style meta playfulness. It’s wonderful. This one is guaranteed to leave you feeling some kind of way.

If the first film was a menacing love (or something like it) story, IThe Souvenir Part IIi is a fulfilling and ultimately cathartic ghost tale that enriches the first film without diminishing it. As a conclusion, it’s brilliant.
