Tar (2022)
RT Audience Score: 72%
Awards & Nominations: 6 Oscars
66 wins & 237 nominations
Led by the soaring melody of Cate Blanchett’s note-perfect performance, Tár riffs brilliantly on the discordant side of fame-fueled power.
Tár can be tough to follow, although Cate Blanchett in the title role makes it mostly worth the effort.

Tár’s mostly riveting two-and-a-half-hour saga turned out to be oddly clarifying. The film does tell its story in an elliptical, at times confounding way, but that stylistic choice shouldn’t be mistaken for moral indecision.

Tar isn’t based on a true story but it possesses an emotional and intellectual honesty that makes it seem more real than countless made-for-mass-consumption biopics.

Even if you take out the timely “cancel culture” bent, “Tár” works as a really intriguing exploration of the mostly uncharted world of classical music, as “Black Swan” did for ballet and “Whiplash” for jazz.

[Blanchet is] totally convincing as the troubled artist. Yet cold. Cold as the film.

…an exceedingly (and often excessively) deliberate drama that’s rarely, if ever, as compelling and engrossing as one might’ve anticipated…

It offers just enough a performance from Cate Blanchett that hits a high note illustrating the chiaroscuro of a composer, but its pacing is constantly affected by narrative slackness. [Full review in Spanish]

Plot
Tár follows the life of Lydia Tár, a renowned conductor of a major German orchestra, as her life begins to unravel in a modern way, examining the impact and durability of power in today’s society.
Trivia
Goofs / Tidbits
When Lydia is talking to the two technicians after a rehearsal in Berlin, she requests they send her audio and video recordings, but the console in front of them in the booth is actually for controlling lights, not audio/video.
