Critics Consensus

The premise has all the trappings of melodrama, but the excellent performances give the characters complexity and empathy

Audience Consensus

Stephanie Daley is a movie that will leave you feeling like you just got hit by a truck, but in a good way. The performances are top-notch, especially Amber Tamblyn who absolutely kills it in the title role. The story is heavy and deals with some tough subject matter, but it’s handled with care and nuance. The only downside is the ending, which feels a bit rushed and unsatisfying. Overall, if you’re in the mood for a movie that will make you think and feel, Stephanie Daley is definitely worth a watch.

Brougher films with a sharp-eyed, vulnerable, yet combative sense of symbolism that nonetheless sticks close to the drama’s physical specifics.

The acting is uniformly on a high level. Tamblyn is impressive, and Swinton, as usual, is outstanding.

Apart from Swinton’s fine performance, what largely distinguishes this is Brougher’s sharp narrative focus.

There’s a rawness to [it]…it paints slick composition and beautiful, bleeding color on the kind of story about sex and faith that no one has told well in a while.

Cleverly conceived, coolly plotted and driven by two splendid performances, this second feature by indie writer-director Brougher (her first shown here) is hampered by a jarringly abrupt ending that suggests a failure of nerve.
