Critics Consensus

Snowpiercer offers an audaciously ambitious action spectacular for filmgoers numb to effects-driven blockbusters

Audience Consensus

Snowpiercer is the kind of movie that makes you want to stand up and cheer for the underdogs, even if they’re fighting on a train that’s hurtling through a frozen wasteland. Director Bong Joon-ho has created a wild ride that’s part action movie, part social commentary, and all awesome. The cast is fantastic, the visuals are stunning, and the story will keep you on the edge of your seat. Plus, who doesn’t love a good rebellion against the ruling class? All aboard the Snowpiercer, folks!

A madcap addition to the comic-book-derived movies that have dominated cinematic summer fare.

That rare experience you don’t get to have much in the summer anymore, a loud, clanging, original action flick that’s grabbing you by the lapels and yelling in your ears.

It’s a wicked, violent parable, and one of the only movies of the summer worth talking about after the credits roll.

Fueled by implausibility, and for a good portion of the ride much better for it, Bong-Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer posits a nonstop, Earth-encircling train containing the microcosmic survivors of a society killed off by a global warming-induced deep freeze.

If you needed any more convincing of Bongs versatility as a director, credit should be given to the fact that this is an English-language film from a Korean director, that uses language and cultural perspective as a tool in the movies very storytelling.

Snowpiercer examines a class system that refuses to die no matter the circumstances. Director Bong Joon-ho constantly asks whether a person must accept their preordained place in society for the sake of balance and harmony.

Part allegory, part Hero’s Journey, Snowpiercer makes no concessions about its religious and political metaphors, and it is all the stronger for it.

Its satire of actual class warfare is as cutting as the axes the rebels and guards use.

An extraordinary work of climate-change fiction, with bold visuals, gripping action, shocking violence and a brutally clear allegory for the class system.

It’s just as interested in examining topics like climate change, class, and cultural disparity as it is in revealing just how the film’s core team navigates a never-stopping hell train to take on the bad guys.
