Ride With the Devil (1999)

A well-acted, eccentric Civil War film, Ang Lee’s Ride With the Devil is often more visually striking than it is emotionally engaging
Ride with the Devil is a movie that’s like a sandwich with too much bread and not enough filling. Some critics say it’s contemplative, others say it’s action-packed, but I say it’s just okay. The best part is the rivalry between Maguire and the young killer, but even that can’t save the movie from feeling a bit lackluster. It’s like a history lesson that you don’t really want to pay attention to, but you know you should. Overall, it’s not bad, but it’s not great either.

Lee appears to have been torn between making a character study and an action movie, so both elements get short shrift.

The intriguing (if not always successful) result is an oddly contemplative picture about a horribly bellicose time.

While the movie intermittently revs up for some showy combat scenes, its real mtier is a texture of fine-grained observation that brings history to life on the molecular level.

The acting gem in this two-and-a-half-hour epic is the hair-raising rivalry between Maguire and a feral young killer.

Like too many other young men in too many other wars, Maguire’s Jake Roedel sees too much, and grows up too fast.

The Lawrence massacre provides no catharsis, only a sense of despair at the state of the human condition and at young men turned psychopaths.
