Revenge slices and dices genre tropes, working within an exploitation framework while adding a timely — yet never less than viscerally thrilling — feminist spin
Revenge is the kind of movie that makes you want to scream “YAS QUEEN” while covered in fake blood and wielding a machete. Coralie Fargeat’s debut film takes the rape-revenge subgenre and turns it on its head with stunning visuals, a killer soundtrack, and a badass female lead who will have you cheering for her every step of the way. Sure, it’s not for the faint of heart (or stomach), but if you’re looking for a wild ride that will leave you feeling empowered and exhilarated, Revenge is the movie for you.

A stunning reinvention of the rape-revenge exploitation film that had me sitting at the edge of my seat first frame to last.

What happens next is expected-a roaring rampage of revenge, with each of the three hunters confronted like a video game boss-but Fargeat has some fun tricks to deploy.

Revenge won’t be an experience every viewer can handle, but as a piece of extreme horror, it’s an intelligent and flashy debut.

If you usually find the genre icky and exploitative, try this one-but only if you’ve got the stomach for an abattoir’s worth of blood in a single movie.

Revenge is a promising first film and, with any luck, perhaps Fargeat will approach her next film with more of an eye on instilling some dimensionality into her characters to achieve a stronger sense of catharsis.

Once you transcend the gore, the sheer originality of its dynamics, the ingenious transgression of its point of view (…) makes it a thrill ride of mythic proportions.

It knows it’s exploitation and it drives home that it’s exploitation, but it redefines this whole rape-revenge sub-genre in the process.

It doesn’t totally reinvent the rape-revenge premise, but it rips the male gaze out of the audience’s skull. It’s iconoclastic, bombastic, beautiful, and brutal.

Plot
Nearly three years have passed since the beginning of the Clone Wars. The Republic, with the help of the Jedi, take on Count Dooku and the Separatists. With a new threat rising, the Jedi Council sends Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker to aid the captured Chancellor. Anakin feels he is ready to be promoted to Jedi Master. Obi-Wan is hunting down the Separatist General, Grievous. When Anakin has future visions of pain and suffering coming Padmé’s way, he sees Master Yoda for counsel. When Darth Sidious executes Order 66, it destroys most of all the Jedi have built. Experience the birth of Darth Vader. Feel the betrayal that leads to hatred between two brothers. And witness the power of hope.
