Critics Consensus

Led by Anna Diop’s strong central performance, the smartly disquieting Nanny is a promising debut for writer-director Nikyatu Jusu.

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that’ll make you want to sleep with the lights on, Nanny is the one for you. Anna Diop absolutely kills it as the lead, giving us all the creeps we could ever want. And let’s give a round of applause to writer-director Nikyatu Jusu for making such a promising debut. This movie will have you questioning every babysitter you’ve ever hired.

While its horror elements and overall structure lack gratification, it’s the woman at its center and the submergence into her spirit that make it a poignant, wonderfully personal character study.

Diop’s delicate, fine-tuned performance works harmoniously with movie’s shape-shifting and with the other actors, especially Monaghan’s more full-bodied, quietly violent turn.

It’d be better if “Nanny” leaned into its own ambiguousness and myth-making for its final act; there is no need for the film to be quite as literal as it winds up being.

The film, despite being mostly set in a huge, expensive apartment that inexplicably seems to be illuminated only by low-wattage lightbulbs, by and large resists the easy tropes of conventional horror.

A creeping tale of the ways in which a mother comes undone. It’s just unfortunate that Nanny comes undone alongside her.

It feels reminiscent of 70s classics like Rosemary’s Baby and Don’t Look Now in its subtlety and startlingly intimate look at a different slice of domestic life.

Telling the story of a nanny trying to raise money to bring her son to America, this feature debut from writer-director Nikyatu Jusu plays both as an emotional drama and an enduringly evocative horror.

[T]he movie gradually becomes more of a horror story … It’s far less convincing or developed in that regard.
