Critics Consensus

Critics say My Dog Skip is cute, wholesome entertainment for the family. It’s especially designed to appeal to your sentiment, but you might find yourself choking up just the same

Audience Consensus

My Dog Skip is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and want to adopt a Jack Russell Terrier. Sure, it has its clichs and predictable moments, but it’s a heartwarming story about the bond between a boy and his dog. Plus, who doesn’t love a movie with cussin’ in it? Harry Connick Jr.’s narration may be a bit banal, but the real star of the show is Skip, who steals the spotlight from Frasier’s Eddie. So grab some tissues and get ready for a tail-wagging good time.

From the very first words you hear in My Dog Skip, you know you have hit a rare, precious breed of movie, one that honors and rejoices in the language.

The banal voice-over narration by Harry Connick Jr., combined with the gooey score and feckless direction adds up to a sterilization of American life that makes Norman Rockwell look like Diane Arbus.

Worst of all, the Jack Russell playing Skip is allowed to mug la Frasier’s Eddie instead of behaving like an actual canine.

Not a mawkish dying-dog tearjerker, “My Dog Skip” carries a touch of Mark Twain, with quasi-dangerous tall tales and awareness of a gap between childhood and boyhood. Plus, as it’s said of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” there’s cussin’ in it.
