Made (2001)
RT Audience Score: 66%

Not as good as Swingers, but it’s still witty and goofy enough for some laughs
Made is a movie that’s like a pizza with toppings you don’t really like, but you eat it anyway because it’s pizza. Vince Vaughn’s character is obnoxious, but in a way that makes you want to keep watching just to see what he’ll do next. The film doesn’t bring anything new to the table when it comes to mob life, but it’s still enjoyable to watch. The buddy banter is great, but the serious moments feel a bit out of place. Overall, it’s a fun and unpredictable movie that’s worth a watch.

Unfortunately, Vaughn repeatedly crosses the line between persuasively playing an obnoxious character and coming across as nerve-gratingly self-indulgent.

TOP CRITIC
If the film’s too ready to go with the flow of Chris Doyle’s handheld camerawork, and sometimes seems ad hoc, its spot-on attention to the faux pas of the moment certainly raises a smile.

With both movies and TV constantly mining mob life for script fodder, Made never comes up with a new twist on the material.

Favreau gives his film a curious final touch of earnestness, even sentimentality, but he gets away with it and Made swings funkily along.

There are very funny moments, and some wonderful dialogue, but the film’s self-consciously serious moments sit uncomfortably with the buddy banter.

Slick suits, hip urban nightspots, and an over the top performance by Vince Vaughn make this rambunctious farce an enjoyable and unpredictable movie with some obligatory fist fighting.

Cinema Crazed
Vaughn hits the bullseye as a strident, volatile jerk who can’t keep his mouth shut. You never really like him, but you can’t wait to see what he’ll do next — his missteps and offenses are so unbelievable you wince, but you can’t look away.

The same offbeat sensibility that informed Swingers is also evident here, except that unlike the 1996 film, which dealt with real issues, Favreau’s new crime-comedy is plotless
