Last Film Show is as visually intoxicating (the glimpses of vibrantly colored films, the sight of meals simmering in herbs so gorgeous that you’ll swear you’ll smell the aroma) as it is thematically rich.

“Last Film Show” retains a layer of gauziness that keeps it from growing twee; this is a downbeat film that doesn’t ask to be watched so much as looked through.

While Last Film Show is a bit sketchy on where it stands in the analogue-versus digital debate, there’s no doubt about what it achieves. Through Samay’s unending wonderment, the movie reminds of us of cinema’s ability to both enchant and inspire.

It’s perhaps why the personal thread of Chhello Show, culled from Nalin’s own journey to become a filmmaker, feels diluted in the face of the well-tested tropes the film force-fits itself into.

A comparison with Cinema Paradiso is inevitable. Unfortunately for Chhello Show, there is no comparison between the two. A pity, because it is sweet, funny and moving in its own way.
