Whether you see Kajillionaire as refreshingly unique or simply bizarre will depend on your cinematic adventurousness — and fans of writer-director Miranda July wouldn’t have it any other way
Kajillionaire is the kind of movie that makes you want to hug your loved ones a little tighter and appreciate the weirdness of life. Miranda July’s unique storytelling style is on full display, and the performances from Evan Rachel Wood and Gina Rodriguez are top-notch. It’s a heist movie, but not really, and a family drama, but not really. It’s just a delightful, offbeat gem that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Plus, who doesn’t love a good bubble bath scene?

The chemistry between Rodriguez and Wood is undeniable, and Rodriguez’s more naturalistic performance balances out her costar’s affected shuffling and deep, gravely monotone.

Kajillionaire takes a heartbreaking story – a child of abuse trying to escape her sociopathic parents – and bloats it so full of Little Miss Sunshine kook that any emotional sharpness is left soft and doughy.

The film’s sparkiest revelation is Rodriguez, almost spectacularly charming and skilled as an ingénue schemer with more life experience than she’s letting on.

For all of July’s quirks and visual peculiarities, her brand of filmmaking fits an indie narrative structure that manages to be universal in its oddball specificity.

Deep Focus Review
It’s a heist film, but one so singular and beguiling in tone that to group it in with that genre would be misleading.
