Critics Consensus

Boosted by Meryl Streep’s charismatic performance as Julia Child, Julie and Julia is a light, but fairly entertaining culinary comedy

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and crave French cuisine, then Julie & Julia is the perfect dish for you. With Meryl Streep and Amy Adams serving up delectable performances, this film is a feast for the senses. And if you’re like me, you’ll be dreaming of boeuf bourguignon long after the credits roll. Bon appétit!

[Amy Adams’] half of the film plays like a below-par rom-com, so here’s the question: is the good half good enough? Probably, yes, but then I would watch Meryl rearranging a closet. It’s just the way I am.

Julie & Julia was pure entertainment. The title of this film should be amended to Julie, Julia, & Nora. Nora Ephron’s script and direction, along with the performances of Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, add up to one joyous picture.

The drama, comedy, and cooking is all skillfully balanced, although with a two-hour runtime, the pacing isn’t the most perceptive.

To belabor the inevitable food metaphors, it is a delicious, escapist confection best savored in the moment, with no expectation that it will sustain you in the days ahead.
