Critics Consensus

Smart, original, and above all terrifying, It Follows is the rare modern horror film that works on multiple levels — and leaves a lingering sting

Audience Consensus

It Follows is the kind of movie that makes you want to sleep with one eye open and a baseball bat by your side. The concept of a monster that relentlessly follows you until it kills you is terrifying, but what makes this movie truly great is the way it’s shot. The cinematography is stunning, and the retro score adds to the overall creepy vibe. It’s definitely a must-see for horror fans, but maybe don’t watch it alone in the dark.

No question that the storytelling here is impressive; the story itself, however, is a bit thin.

It’s a testament to how scary a movie It Follows is that for days after watching it, you walk around thinking up survival plans – should you hide, stay on the move forever, pass the haunting on to someone else?

While I didn’t find myself particularly frightened by the film as many have suggested, I marveled at the gorgeous cinematography, retro score, and use of location.

Ultimately, rather than sex, what seems threatening here is impending adulthood in all its dimensions, and in its floaty, insubstantial way, It Follows catches some of the mingled excitement and terror of growing up.

“By excluding grown ups from the narrative, ‘It Follows’ highlights the perseverance of young adults and their reliance on each other for a shared vision.”

A methodical, unnerving and surprisingly mean thriller. Mitchell perfectly frames and moves the camera to emphasize how vulnerable his characters are and, in so doing, maximizes the existential dread.
