Hudson Hawk (1991)

Hudson Hawk’s kitchen-sink approach to its blend of action and slapstick results in a surreal, baffling misfire
Hudson Hawk” is a movie that critics either love or hate, but let’s be real, it’s a hot mess. Bruce Willis plays a cat burglar who sings show tunes while he steals priceless artifacts, and if that doesn’t sound ridiculous enough, there’s also a plot involving Leonardo da Vinci’s alchemy machine. But you know what? It’s so bad that it’s kind of good. It’s like a cheesy ’90s action-comedy that you can’t help but laugh at. So grab some popcorn, turn off your brain, and enjoy the ride.

Let’s be clear: ‘Hudson Hawk’ is, by most reasonable standards, a pretty bad movie. Yet you have to give it this much: in contrast to your typical summer blockbuster, then or now, at least it’s got some personality.

This unspeakably awful can make an audience a little crazy. You want to throw things, yell at the actors, beg them to stop.

Essentially, Hudson Hawk was a blockbuster film for viewers who had grown disenchanted with blockbuster films and who were in the mood to see one that pretty much acted like its own Mad Magazine parody.

Occasionally, the humor does click and Willis has enough of an aloof quality to make some of the awkward dialogue actually work.
