The look of Hook is lively indeed but Steven Spielberg directs on autopilot here, giving in too quickly to his sentimental, syrupy qualities
Hook” is a movie that’s as polarizing as pineapple on pizza. Some critics say it’s a bloated mess, while others think it’s a nostalgic adventure that hits all the right notes. Personally, I think it’s a fun ride that’s worth taking. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it’s got Robin Williams at his best, a killer score by John Williams, and some truly gorgeous Neverland sequences. Plus, who doesn’t love seeing a grown-up Peter Pan facing off against Captain Hook? It’s a classic tale that’s been given a fresh spin, and I’m all for it. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and let yourself be transported to a world of magic and wonder. Just don’t forget to think happy thoughts!

There’s no movie that benefits more from the empathy, gentleness, vitality and joy [Robin Williams] brought to the screen.

A woefully uneven retelling of the ”Peter Pan” story.

For very much like Peter, it has clearly gotten harder for this director to break free of the lure of material things and believe in simple magic.

It’s a lot of fun to watch – over two hours of thrills, spills, elaborate sets and special effects, all tied together by a pleasingly varied (and lighter than usual) musical score by John Williams.

Spielberg’s Neverland carries undeniable charm and depth. The problems start when we’re asked to accept its two-dimensional residents as anything other than tourists on a forced march through its various nooks and crannies.

Hook, featuring a grown-up version of the legendary Peter Pan facing off against the captain, offers a nostalgic trip full of adventure.

While Hook successfully transitions between tones, and the Neverland sequences are gorgeous, the movie gets a bit bloated in its second act.

What Williams brings to Peter though isn’t just his effervescence, it’s his pathos and vulnerability. He’s a scared, confused man just hoping to save his kids and that core of love and humanity is what makes Hook work for those of us that love it.

Hook has everything that Hollywood currently holds dear: precocious children, regressive adults and unabashed nostalgia for old-fashioned family values.

“Hook” is a huge and impressive movie. One could say it’s the ultimate baby-boomer fantasy. Sadly, it’s too loaded down with grown-up compromises and calculated Hollywood devices to really makes us think happy thoughts … and fly.

Plot
Peter Pan (Robin Williams) has grown up to be a cut-throat merger and acquisitions lawyer, and is married to Wendy’s (Dame Maggie Smith’s) granddaughter, Moira (Caroline Goodall). Captain James Hook (Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps his children, Jack (Charlie Korsmo) and Maggie (Amber Scott), and Peter returns to Neverland with Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts). With the help of her and the Lost Boys, he must remember how to be Peter Pan again in order to save his children by battling with Captain Hook once again.
