Good Night Oppy (2022)
RT Audience Score: 100%
Awards & Nominations: NA
There are more illuminating documentaries about space exploration, but that doesn’t diminish Good Night Oppy’s infectious awe of the cosmos.
While there may be other documentaries out there that dive deeper into the mysteries of space, Good Night Oppy still manages to capture the pure wonder and excitement of exploring the cosmos. It’s like watching a kid on Christmas morning, except instead of presents, they’re discovering the secrets of the universe. Sure, it may not be the most informative documentary out there, but it’s definitely one of the most entertaining. So sit back, grab some popcorn, and get ready to be awed by the beauty of the cosmos.

A testament to dreaming, to cooperation, to pushing boundaries, and tapping into the vast potential of humanity.

A wholly manipulative—and surprisingly shallow—portrait of human ingenuity and intergalactic exploration, as well as another case study of form getting in the way of content.

The movie is practically a companion piece for the Matt Damon movie The Martian; they share a bright outlook, a problem solver’s delight at the labor of thinking through it all.

The amazing story of the Mars Exploration Rover mission manages to feel emotionally like “E.T.” and look like “Star Wars.”

To get across the magnitude of what his subjects saw and did, White pours on the commercial filmmaking devices from start to finish, in the manner of fun-for-all-ages summer blockbusters that used to dominate the box office in the 1980s and ’90s.

Good Night Oppy is unashamedly corny, but it also presents something that is not seen often in documentaries of today. There is no grand conspiracy or mystery to solve. It’s a heartwarming & planet spanning story that is perfect for the holiday season. November 23, 2022

The anthropomorphized biography of the Mars rover, Opportunity, Good Night Oppy lays on the awe and inspiration too thickly, in an attempt to create a real-life Wall-E story.

Goodnight Oppy is a great adventure film for families because of its educational themes of teamwork, positive attitudes, and how looking up at the sky truly offers limitless possibilities.

This enthusiasm is laid on fairly thick in the feature, pushing the effort into a few manipulative moments, but the core sense of wonder and inspiration remains potent.

Plot
Follows Opportunity, the Mars Exploration Rover affectionately dubbed “Oppy” by her creators and scientists at NASA. Oppy was originally expected to live for only 90 days, but she ultimately explored the Red Planet for nearly 15 years. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory launched Perseverance, Oppy’s “younger sister” in February 2021 and will provide access and footage in the filming of this documentary.
