Get Shorty (1995)
RT Audience Score: 70%
Awards & Nominations: 6 wins & 16 nominations
With a perfect cast and a sly twist on the usual Hollywood gangster dynamic, Get Shorty delivers a sharp satire that doubles as an entertaining comedy-thriller in its own right
Get Shorty is the kind of movie that makes you want to be a gangster, or at least a Hollywood producer. With a cast that’s cooler than the other side of the pillow and a script that’s sharper than a tack, this movie is a hilarious ride from start to finish. It’s like Ocean’s Eleven meets The Godfather, but with more laughs and less blood. If you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor and get shorty with it.

How cool can a mere movie be? A perfect cast and great script, based on a hilariously witty best seller, are key elements. When you add a talented director and let the magic of Hollywood take over, the result is Get Shorty.

Like the Elmore Leonard novel it adapts, Get Shorty is fast, very funny, minorly caustic, and about as consequential and lasting as the movies Chili himself tries to green-light.

Hollywood has been in love with mobsters since the beginning of movies. But the other side of the equation has seldom been considered. That is, until now.

A drolly offbeat look at Hollywood mores dedicated to the proposition that the best preparation for becoming a film producer is a stint in the criminal underworld.

DeVito’s wicked version of a self-absorbed superstar is worth the price of admission alone.

The screenplay is brilliant (based on the novel by Elmore Leonard), interweaving fast-paced dialogue with sharp editing and plenty of humor.

Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
This Hollywood is the one we want to believe exists: no film school snots here, no MBA’s, no dock-worker philosophers-turned-screenwriters. Just a town full of second-rate swindlers where a clear-eyed racketeer can keep his eye on the ball and rise.

Plot
Some guys get all the luck, whether they like it or not. Chili Palmer happens to be in Hollywood collecting a gambling debt when he’s struck by lightning (not literally). Called a natural for the movie business, he’s snagged up by a producer. The rest is history.
