Frances Ha (2013)
RT Audience Score: 77%
Awards & Nominations: 1 win & 49 nominations
Audiences will need to tolerate a certain amount of narrative drift, but thanks to sensitive direction from Noah Baumbach and an endearing performance from Greta Gerwig, Frances Ha makes it easy to forgive
Frances Ha is like a warm hug from a friend who knows exactly what you’re going through. Greta Gerwig shines as the titular character, navigating the ups and downs of young adulthood with humor and heart. The film’s black and white cinematography adds a touch of whimsy to the already charming story. Plus, any movie that features a David Bowie montage is a winner in my book. It’s the perfect pick-me-up for anyone feeling lost or unsure about their place in the world.

A rare and wonderful film that give thanks for friends and revels in life’s low times.

Yes, it is rather kooky, and highly self-conscious… but it’s also sweet, endearing, touching, and features proper women you can actually believe in, and who aren’t just drippily searching for love, which is something of a novelty.

One of the happiest sights you’ll see all summer is a montage of Gerwig running and twirling across Chinatown with David Bowie’s “Modern Love” on the soundtrack.

The thoughtfulness and commitment of Gerwig’s performance in its shifts from chaotic exuberance to rigorous rehearsal suggest that she is the more interesting artist to watch.

As Frances literally dances her way through the streets of New York, you can’t help smiling and knowing she will be OK. She will figure out how to be the adult she was meant to be.

Much of Baumbach’s sense of joy throughout Frances Ha resides in Gerwig’s infectious charisma, and her character’s spiritual awakening of sorts, her self-discovery.

Deep Focus Review
Damn it all this movie bowled me over, and the second it was done I wanted to stand up from my seat, climb up into the projection booth, and bribe them to play it again and again and again. That feeling will stand. Greta Gerwig for everything.

Being a big fan of Noah Baumbach’s work in general, it’s exciting to see him return to form.

Battleship Pretension
The film, which, though still enjoyable, because Baumbach and Gerwig have talent, is more insubstantial than it needs to be.
