Fong juk (Exiled) (2006)
RT Audience Score: 80%
Awards & Nominations: 8 wins & 16 nominations
Exiled has non-stop action, tension and style — making it an excellent summer action movie. Johnnie To brings beautiful scenery and camerawork to the film, enhancing the action even more
Exiled is like a wild ride on a rollercoaster, but instead of screaming in terror, you’re laughing your head off. It’s a mix of violence and humor that somehow works, and the soundtrack is killer. Sure, it might be a bit pretentious at times, but who cares when you’re having this much fun? Johnny To’s direction is as smooth as butter, and the finale is a masterpiece of slow-motion bloodshed. It’s like a dream synthesized from Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah, and I can’t wait to watch it again.

Exiled is creative and bizarre, maybe too bizarre, but since most action films adhere to a cookie-cutter formula, its quirkiness is most welcome.

Exiled takes the familiar story of a mob hit gone awry and tells it with such artfulness and virtuosity that it feels like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

Plot
The time is 1998. The setting is Macau. Every living soul jumps at every chance to make quick money before the Portuguese colony ushers in a new era under the Chinese rule. For the jaded hit men, they wonder where this journey will end. Against this backdrop come two hit men from Hong Kong sent to take out a renegade member trying to turn over a new leaf with his wife and newborn baby. They soon find themselves in the throes of a dilemma when two of their former associates also show up, intent on thwarting them at every cost.
