Dinosaur (2000)
RT Audience Score: 48%
Awards & Nominations: 4 wins & 21 nominations
While Dinosaur’s plot is generic and dull, its stunning computer animation and detailed backgrounds are enough to make it worth a look
Dinosaur is a movie that’s visually stunning, but it’s not without its flaws. Some critics say it’s too dark and scary in places, while others think the storytelling is lacking. One critic even called it “the dumber version of The Land Before Time.” But hey, at least there are no stupid songs, right? Overall, it’s a movie that’s worth watching for the CGI alone, but don’t expect too much from the plot. And if you’re a parent, be prepared for talking dinosaurs and bring your earplugs!

Sadly, there is little sign of the benefits of evolution in the storytelling itself, which sticks too closely to a narrative template seemingly dating back to the Mesolithic era.

Its commitment to palaeontological credibility still takes a back seat to storytelling, with a lot more disaster and conflict than leaf-munching and hibernating.

Dinosaur cuts a bland, compliant figure, its narrative and characterizations subservient to splashy feats of CGI legerdemain.

It wouldn’t have hurt to spend some of that money to tell a story as original as the movie’s design — though I’m sure I speak for millions in thanking Disney for not including any stupid songs.

Plot
During an attack on a pack of Iguanodon, an egg is separated and ends up with the possession of a group of lemurs. The lemurs care for this egg and the young creature born from it, which they call Aladar (D.B. Sweeney). When meteorites hit Earth, Aladar and his family must leave their homeland. Away from home and as close to danger as they have ever been, they meet up with a huge group of dinosaurs, led by Kron (Samuel E. Wright) and Bruton (Peter Siragusa). All together they are trying to reach the nesting grounds, but it’s not going to be easy.
