Critics Consensus

Bridge of Spies finds new life in Hollywood’s classic Cold War espionage thriller formula, thanks to reliably outstanding work from Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

Audience Consensus

Bridge of Spies is like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night – comforting, familiar, and just what you need. Spielberg’s direction is masterful, creating a tense atmosphere that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Tom Hanks is his usual charming self, but it’s Mark Rylance who steals the show with his understated yet powerful performance. The film may not be an Oscar contender, but it’s damn good cinema that will leave you feeling satisfied. Plus, who doesn’t love middle-aged men stumbling around in snow banks?

Bridge of Spies is a quality film featuring loads of commendable work, but Spielberg’s glossy and exceedingly upbeat take on the material might make it more of a crowdpleaser than an Oscar contender.

Bridge of Spies is a warm portrait of a friendship, an excitingly intricate story of realistically scaled suspense, and a visually ravishing and lovingly crafted rendering of mid-century America, where how you look matters much less than what you do.

The genius of the casting is in the contrast: Hanks, the richly sympathetic screen actor, and Rylance, no less colossal a talent but one comparatively untried in cinema.

From start to finish, Bridge of Spies is an engrossing, expertly made picture from Spielberg, and its historical merits, paired with its contemporary political relevancies, make it a supremely important American film for today.

Bridge of Spies truly celebrates the dignity of each human person and the respect due each one, whether or not that person is our closest friend, an in-need stranger, or our worst enemy.

Has a lot of talk about spy craft, but an espionage thriller it is not.

Just a pretty basic, solid, old-fashioned thing – it’s middle-aged men stumbling around in snow banks. But compelling ones!
