An eerie, haunting spectacle, Batman succeeds as dark entertainment, even if Jack Nicholson’s Joker too often overshadows the title character
Holy reviews, Batman! This movie is a wild ride through a fun-house of ghouls and phantoms. Tim Burton’s unique vision for the DC Universe is on full display, and Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson’s performances are wonderfully weird. Sure, the dialogue could have been fresher and the ending falls a bit flat, but overall, Batman is a stunning achievement that holds up even 30 years later. It’s a must-watch for any superhero fan or lover of brooding noir films.

It’s an unforgivably flat ending for a movie of such astonishing contours. But its first two-thirds — which should be called The Joker’s Big Misadventure — is probably the best film of the year.

The idea of doing a dark, neurotic, highly stylized and highly claustrophobic superproduction is an audacious and appealing one, but director Tim Burton has only made it halfway there.
