Volker Schlöndorff is a German movie director known for his work in the New German Cinema movement. He was born on March 31, 1939, in Wiesbaden, Germany. Schlöndorff studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and later at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques. He began his career as an assistant director to Louis Malle and Jean-Pierre Melville. Schlöndorff’s most notable films include “The Tin Drum,” which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1979, and “The Handmaid’s Tale.” He has also directed several documentaries and television films.
