André Bazin (1918-1958) was a French film critic and film theorist. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential film critics of all time. He was a major proponent of the auteur theory, which holds that a film’s director is the primary creative force behind a film. He was also a major influence on the French New Wave movement of the 1950s and 1960s. He wrote extensively on film theory, aesthetics, and the history of cinema. His writings have been translated into many languages and remain influential to this day.
