Critics Consensus

David Lynch’s surreal Eraserhead uses detailed visuals and a creepy score to create a bizarre and disturbing look into a man’s fear of parenthood

Audience Consensus

Eraserhead is like a fever dream that you can’t shake off. It’s a black and white nightmare that will leave you feeling like you just woke up from a bad trip. The sound design alone will make you feel like you’re trapped in a factory that’s about to collapse. But despite all of that, it’s still a beautiful and strange film that’s worth watching, even if it’s just to say that you survived it. David Lynch truly is the king of midnight movies.

Critics Consensus

Scary, suspenseful, and viscerally thrilling, Halloween set the standard for modern horror films.

Audience Consensus

Halloween is the ultimate horror movie that will make you scream, jump, and maybe even pee your pants a little. With its iconic score and terrifying villain, Michael Myers, this movie will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. And let’s not forget about the final girl, Laurie Strode, who proves that you don’t need to be a virgin to survive a horror movie (but it definitely helps). Whether you’re a horror fanatic or just looking for a good scare, Halloween is a must-watch classic that will haunt you long after the credits roll.

Carpenter’s 1978 slasher classic has inspired a million imitations as well as sequels, but few that demonstrate so clearly that a disreputable genre movie can also be a pure, rigorous work of art.

Critics Consensus

Paul Schrader’s Blue Collar offers a searing, darkly funny indictment of labor exploitation and rampant consumerism that’s fueled by the outstanding work of an excellent cast.

Audience Consensus

Blue Collar is a gritty and intense film that takes a hard look at the struggles of working-class Americans. While the pacing may be a bit slow at times, the movie’s eclecticism is truly remarkable. Paul Schrader’s directorial debut is a powerful and affecting social portrait that is both a psychological drama and a black comedy. The performances are excellent, particularly Harvey Keitel and Yaphet Kotto, who bring a raw and authentic energy to their roles. Overall, Blue Collar is a must-see for anyone who wants to understand the challenges faced by blue-collar workers in America, and it’s a great reminder that even in the toughest of times, there’s always hope.

First they think it is a flop, because they get only six hundred dollars out of it, but then Zeke realizes that they also have gotten some “hot” material. They decide to blackmail their union. Superman deftly blends humor and gravitas, taking advantage of the perfectly cast Christopher Reeve to craft a loving, nostalgic tribute to an American pop culture icon.

Audience Consensus

Superman: The Movie is the ultimate superhero flick that still holds up today. Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of the Man of Steel is iconic and his performance is manlier and steelier than any other actor who has taken on the role. The film is full of humor, heart, and adventure, making it the perfect escape for any moviegoer. Plus, the special effects are still impressive even after all these years. It’s no wonder why this classic film is still considered the best superhero movie ever made.

The talents of director John Landis and Saturday Night Live’s irrepressible John Belushi conspired to create a rambunctious, subversive college comedy that continues to resonate.

Audience Consensus

Animal House is the ultimate college movie that will make you want to go back to school just to experience the shenanigans. It’s a classic that has stood the test of time with its hilarious one-liners and unforgettable characters. Sure, it may be a bit tasteless and sophomoric, but that’s what makes it so damn funny. John Belushi’s performance as Blutarsky is a standout and the soundtrack is a perfect mix of orchestral maneuvers and catchy oldies. Animal House is a must-watch for anyone who wants to relive the glory days of college or just needs a good laugh.

Having it all planned down to the last detail, the American, well-meaning paterfamilias, Clark Griswold, and his supportive wife, Ellen, take their two teenage children, Rusty and Audrey, on a cross-country trip from the suburbs of Chicago, all the way to sunny California’s Walley World amusement park. However, anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and before long, Ellen’s cousin, Catherine, and her husband, Eddie, enter the picture, and Clark is on the verge of blowing a gasket. Now, Roy Walley’s wonderful park seems so far away, and even though the prospect of a clandestine meeting with the alluring blonde in a fast, 1981 Ferrari 308 GTSi sounds tempting, Clark must do the right thing, and find the promised land. How hard can it be to have the perfect vacation?

Ralph Bakshi’s valiant attempt at rendering Tolkein’s magnum opus in rotoscope never lives up to the grandeur of its source material, with a compressed running time that flattens the sweeping story and experimental animation that is more bizarre than magical

Audience Consensus

The Lord of the Rings has been reviewed by many critics, some of whom loved it and some of whom hated it. But let’s be real, who cares what they think? If you’re a fan of elves, dwarves, and talking trees, then this movie is for you. Sure, it might be a bit confusing at times, but that’s just part of the fun. And let’s not forget about the creepy animation that still manages to give us nightmares to this day. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the ride. Just don’t forget to bring a map of Middle Earth, because you might get lost along the way.

Lacking a firm center in Frodo’s story, the film plays itself out as a bewildering parade of elves, dwarves, ores, trolls and talking trees.

What most people remember is the mix of the live-action tracing within the traditional animation and just how effectively creepy it managed to be, but for the time this did a pretty good job of adapting the dense novels.

It looked terrible then and it still does: cartoon characters move differently from live actors, and the attempt to duplicate natural movement ends in stylistic incoherence.

Critics Consensus

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is deeply humane sci-fi exploring male obsession, cosmic mysticism, and music

Audience Consensus

Close Encounters of the Third Kind” is out of this world! Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece is a magic act with dramatic interludes that will leave you feeling reassured and enlightened. Sure, it’s a big ol’ mess of a movie, but it’s an extremely lovable one. The film’s power and intensity will grip you from start to finish, and who’s to say it couldn’t all actually happen tomorrow? This underrated masterpiece should be ranked amongst Spielberg’s greatest works. So, if you’re looking for a film that will move you, challenge you, provoke you, and ultimately reassure you that your life matters, then “Close Encounters” is the film for you!

Storyline

Two parallel stories are told. In the first, a group of research scientists from a variety of backgrounds are investigating the strange appearance of items in remote locations, primarily desert regions. In continuing their investigation, one of the lead scientists, a Frenchman named Claude Lacombe, incorporates the Kodály method of music education as a means of communication in their work. The response, in turn, at first baffles the researchers, until American cartographer David Laughlin deciphers the meaning of the response. In the second, electric company lineman and family man Roy Neary and single mother Jillian Guiler are among some individuals in Muncie, Indiana who experience some paranormal activity before some flashes of bright lights in the sky, which they believe to be a UFO. Roy becomes obsessed with what he saw, unlike some others, especially in some form of authority, who refuse to acknowledge their belief that it was a UFO in not wanting to appear crazy. That obsession both for Roy and Jillian is ratcheted up a notch when they begin to have a vision of a mound with vertical striations on its side as a key to what is going on. While the obsession negatively affects Roy’s life as he knows it in its entirety, Jillian knows she has to find the answer as to its meaning, especially as it relates to her only child, three year old Barry Guiler, who may be more attuned to what is happening than the adult figures around him. These two stories have the potential to intersect if Roy and Jillian can discover where they’ve seen that mound before, and if they can overcome what they believe to be the lies perpetrated by those in authority in covering up what is going on.
