Dr. Jelani Cobb is an award-winning journalist, author, and professor of history and director of the Institute for African American Studies at the University of Connecticut. He is a staff writer for The New Yorker, where he covers race, politics, history, and culture. He is the author of several books, including The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress and To the Break of Dawn: A Freestyle on the Hip Hop Aesthetic. He has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and NPR’s All Things Considered. He is a recipient of the Sidney Hillman Prize for Opinion and Analysis Journalism and the National Magazine Award for Commentary.
