Critics Consensus

Alice Darling is a film that delicately and powerfully explores the psychological damage of abusive relationships, with a focus on the bonds of sisterhood and the healing power of love. While some critics have found fault with the narrative pacing and lack of a clear story arc, the performances of Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, and Wunmi Mosaku are electric and captivating. Kendrick, in particular, shines in a non-comedic role, showcasing her depth and range as an actress. The film’s ability to balance heavy themes with moments of levity and hope is a testament to the skill of director Mary Nighy and screenwriter Alanna Francis. Overall, Alice Darling is a must-see for anyone interested in nuanced explorations of trauma and healing.

Audience Consensus

Alice Darling is a movie that will make you feel all the emotions. From the powerful performances of Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, and Wunmi Mosaku to the heart-wrenching story of psychological manipulation and abuse, this film will leave you feeling both devastated and hopeful. While it may not be the most lighthearted movie out there, it’s definitely worth a watch for anyone who wants to see a story about the strength of sisterhood and the power of love to heal even the deepest wounds. Plus, who doesn’t love a good cry every once in a while?

Ultimately, it’s about the bonds of sisterhood and how those who know you best and love you most can help you heal, or at least start you on that path.

The emotional crux of Alice Darling is less the manner in which it lays out a roadmap for an exit from an abusive relationship and more its attentiveness to the profound ramifications of such relationships for the women in them.

Manages to hold its ground as a drama because it privileges Alice’s experience of abuse over specific instances of it. We certainly see some of Simon’s controlling behavior, but what matters more are the lasting effects of it.

Alice, Darling addresses important themes but struggles as a complete narrative with significant pacing issues. Anna Kendrick captures the fraught paranoia, isolation, and dangerous physical decline of an emotionally abused woman.

Films about abuse can be difficult to capture in the most dignified way, but “Alice, Darling,” anchored by women off and on screen, manages to do just that.

Together with Mosaku and Horn, Kendrick has never been better in a non-comedic role, and the trio altogether are great.

While the story may feel heavy, Francis’ script has moments of levity .. The bond of friendship the trio has feels realistic, and above all, shows that there is not just strength in numbers, but there is also hope and support.
