Critics Consensus

The Minions’ antic shenanigans are beginning to grate despite this sequel’s injection of retro chic, although this loony marathon of gags will still delight young children.

Audience Consensus

The Minions are back and they’re up to their usual hijinks! While the retro vibe is a nice touch, their crazy antics are starting to wear thin. But let’s be real, kids will still love this non-stop laugh fest. Get ready for a wild ride with these little yellow troublemakers!

Storyline

In the heart of the 1970s, amid a flurry of feathered hair and flared jeans, Gru is growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. Luckily, he gets some mayhem-making backup from his loyal followers, the Minions. Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please—deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons and pull off their first missions. When the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles, Gru interviews to become their newest member. It doesn’t go well (to say the least), and only gets worse after Gru outsmarts them and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, Gru will turn to an unlikely source for guidance, Wild Knuckles himself, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU All Critics (122) | Top Critics (37) | Fresh (87) | Rotten (35) [Kids] are going to love this sequel, and while that’s not surprising, that their parents might find themselves giggling right along with their youngsters somewhat is.  July 2, 2022 | Rating: 3/4  Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com TOP CRITIC A frequently funny, handsomely animated and generally enjoyable movie.  July 1, 2022 | Rating: 3.5/5  David Stratton The Australian TOP CRITIC Is this in any way, shape, or form defensible as meaningful art? Certainly not. Is it really cute? Yup. Aggressively so? Sure, but in our current political hellscape, there are certainly worse things to be affronted by.  July 1, 2022  Kathleen Sachs Chicago Reader TOP CRITIC Every character in this film feels alive, which is quite a win for a franchise whose characters are amongst the fastest-selling toys on the planet.  July 1, 2022 | Rating: 3.5/5  Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express TOP CRITIC Minions: The Rise of Gru is hardly the best of the Despicable Me movies or spinoffs. But the ridiculousness quotient of The Rise of Gru is still high enough to spark at least mild rejuvenation.  July 1, 2022  Stephanie Zacharek TIME Magazine TOP CRITIC For all its efforts at wild humor, The Rise of Gru never quite builds up a comic head of steam. It’s filled with laugh lines, but they feel like placeholders — a lot of middling bits about the time period plus a tired assortment of anachronisms.  July 1, 2022  Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture TOP CRITIC Certainly the charming title characters remain cuter than the average bear, but their latest pushy adventure remains a movie that only small fry up through the grammar school set might really enjoy.  July 2, 2022 | Rating: 2.5/5  John Urbancich JMuvies The jokes come fast and furious, not caring if they land or don’t land, it’s just amazingly fun. This made me laugh, and when the Minions co-star, the films in this series are much better. For the holiday weekend, MINIONS set off fireworks of hilarity.  July 2, 2022 | Rating: 4/5  Patrick McDonald WBGR-FM (93.7 FM – Monroe, WI) MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU lives up to the previous films in the “Despicable Me” series in mixing silliness and cleverness in equal doses, resulting in an animated concoction that should delight all ages.  July 2, 2022 | Rating: 3.5/5  Daniel M. Kimmel North Shore Movies …does a pretty decent job of keeping the little rascals at the top of the animated heap…  July 2, 2022 | Rating: 3/5  Eddie Harrison film-authority.com Easily the best one of these since the first Despicable Me back in 2010.  July 2, 2022 | Rating: 3/5  Tim Brayton Alternate Ending I love the Minions… but I’m not sure that I love them for 90 minutes at a stretch.  July 1, 2022 | Rating: 2/4  Kevin Carr Fat Guys at the Movies…

Trivia

Goofs / Tidbits
In the scene at the Bank of Evil, Vector’s father shows us the same photo that we see on his desk in the first movie. This would put Vector’s age at least the same as Gru’s. In the first film, we see a young Gru watching the moon landing. In this film he’s supposed to be 11 years old. Set in 1976, that would make young Gru 4 years old in 1969.
