Surging on strong performances from Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts, Rust and Bone is as vibrant and messily unpredictable as life itself
Rust and Bone is a movie that will leave you feeling like you just went through an emotional rollercoaster. While some critics found the story to be meandering and lacking in character development, Marion Cotillard’s performance as an amputee is nothing short of incredible. The film may wander off course at times, but it’s worth sticking around for the beautiful scenes and the hopefulness that just can’t be shaken off. Plus, who doesn’t love a good melodramatic whirlpool?

… where it falters is the latter half of the story… and the evolution (or lack thereof) of its protagonist and reluctantly drawn heroine.

Though Stéphanie’s legs are removed from sight through the wonders of digital film effects, the character will remain in your consciousness like a phantom limb.

The movie wanders off course in the final act, as if none of its three screenwriters could quite figure out how to end it.

“Rust” has some lovely scenes – Alain carrying Stephanie out to the sea – but it seems to wander off in search of something it already has, and in wandering, it loses its way.

Audiard seeks to invest his audience on a physical and emotional level; not through narrative realism, but through a sensuous drama that mines the intimacy of its characters.
