Mimic (1997)

Mimic finds director Guillermo del Toro struggling to inject his unique sensibilities into a studio picture – and delivering just enough genre thrills to recommend
Mimic is a movie that will make you want to call your exterminator ASAP. It’s a creepy, crawly ride that will have you squirming in your seat. But don’t worry, you won’t be alone – even the characters in the movie are freaking out about the giant killer cockroaches. The settings are perfectly atmospheric, with flickering tunnels and murky flashlight beams adding to the eerie unease. And while it may be derivative of those classic sci-fi horror Big Bug films from the fifties, it still manages to entertain with artistic moments. Just make sure you have some bug spray handy before hitting play.

…a picture revolving around human-sized killer cockroaches should be less of a slog and much more fun than this.

The atmospheric settings are the most spectacular elements, perfectly utilizing flickering tunnels, moist walkways, noisy air vents, and murky flashlight beams.

It seems Del Toro was given free rein to rework the film AND share candidly about the process that forced him to compromise so much in his original theatrical version.

It comes off smarter and creepier than I recall the original, less about scares than a sustained atmosphere of eerie unease and skittery threats.

Plot
A disease carried by common cockroaches is killing Manhattan children. In an effort to stop the epidemic an entomologist, Susan Tyler, creates a mutant breed of insect that secretes a fluid to kill the roaches. This mutant breed was engineered to die after one generation, but three years later Susan finds out that the species has survived and evolved into a large, gruesome monster that can mimic human form.
