Critics Consensus

Elevated by David Fincher’s directorial talent and Jodie Foster’s performance, Panic Room is a well-crafted, above-average thriller

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that will leave you on the edge of your seat, Panic Room is the perfect choice. With extreme suspense and graphic violence, this movie is definitely not for kids. But for adults who love a good thriller, Panic Room delivers. David Fincher’s claustrophobic ride is like “Wait Until Dark” with emotional helplessness, not just physical. And with a top-notch cast, including Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart, Panic Room is a seamless suspense-thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end. Just don’t expect to watch it again anytime soon, unless you want to relive the panic all over again!

A thinking-man’s women-in-jeopardy picture, Panic Room does about as much as humanly possible with its deliberately restricted one-setting premise.

Ultimately, this is just a big, dumb, commercial suspenser – but it’s one of the best for ages, reminding us that it is still possible to make a high quality piece of popcorn entertainment.

Never averse to glistening darkness, meaty metaphor or grandiloquent technical display, Fincher is also surprisingly at home with hokum.

Let’s hope Fincher has enjoyed his vacation in Popcornopolis; now may the real David Fincher, the black-tar heart David Fincher, please resume his post in the vanguard.

Panic Room is among Fincher’s most straightforward genre exercises, it’s not really interested in subverting or challenging or upsetting anything…but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have anything on its mind.

How did Fincher – a director who is very good at supplying thrills to thrillers, whatever his other strengths or limitations might be – end up shepherding such a leaden film?

Valuing logic over brutality, David Fincher’s claustrophobic ride also touted the real-world practicality of keeping quiet over the cinematic kicks of a loud thriller. It’s like “Wait Until Dark” with helplessness that’s emotional, not just physical.
