Love & Friendship finds director Whit Stillman bringing his talents to bear on a Jane Austen adaptation — with a thoroughly delightful period drama as the result
Love & Friendship is a hilarious and refreshing take on Jane Austen’s work. The film perfectly balances the tender and sardonic tone that Austen is known for, and the dry humor and cutting dialogue of writer-director Whit Stillman is a perfect match. Kate Beckinsale shines as the corseted anti-heroine, and the complicated portrayal of women in this time period is both fascinating and subversive. Plus, the fact that the story wasn’t even published until after Austen’s death just adds to the intrigue. Overall, Love & Friendship is a must-watch for anyone who loves a good period comedy.

The real pleasure here is in the complicated portrayal of the women of this time period and the various ways they navigate and subvert the gendered expectations put upon them by society.

Though the corseted bodices and full skirts suggest an Oscar bait-y period drama, Stillman quickly establishes Love & Friendship as an out-and-out comedy.

Love & Friendship may not be traditional Austen, but it’s pretty stellar Stillman.

Love & Friendship is magnificent, and anyone saying otherwise is in my eyes one gouty attack away from objectionable ignominy.

Tone in Jane Austen is all-important, hinging on a delicate balance between the tender and the sardonic. Whit Stillman captures it perfectly in the trailer for Love & Friendship. In the film itself, the hinge creaks a bit.

The filmmaker’s dry humor and subtle but cutting dialogue finds a perfect showcase in Love & Friendship, creating an unlikely association between himself and the source materials author, Jane Austen.

That the luminous Beckinsale is our corseted anti-heroine helps immensely.

The fact that the writer-director can come up with a number of pointed, scathing lines makes it all the more unfortunate that he pulls his social punches.

The set decoration and costuming is very Masterpiece Theatre, but the feeling of the piece is very modern.

Set in the 1790s, Love and Friendship centers on beautiful widow Lady Susan Vernon, who has come to the estate of her in-laws to wait out colorful rumors about her dalliances circulating through polite society. Whilst there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and her rather reluctant debutante daughter, Frederica.
