Borrowing heavily (and intelligently) from Pixar and Looney Tunes, Despicable Me is a surprisingly thoughtful, family-friendly treat with a few surprises of its own
Despicable Me is a heartwarming tale of a villain turned dad, with the help of three adorable little girls. Steve Carell’s voice acting is hilarious and endearing, and the jokes are fresh and funny. It’s the perfect movie to watch with your kids, or just to enjoy a couple hours of peace and laughter. Plus, who doesn’t love those cute little minions? Overall, Despicable Me is a must-watch for anyone who wants to feel good and have a good laugh.

Charming, touching, and surprisingly funny, Despicable Me showed one man’s journey to being the most hated to finally finding love–thanks to three little girls.

The film benefits immensely from a Carell lead vocal turn that’s loopy and droll.

When an actor has just hit a career low — as I think Steve Carell did in the desperate Dinner for Schmucks — it’s a relief to see them bounce back with a performance that clicks, in a hit film that really needs their services.

It is a perfectly agreeable family entertainment, but not exactly original and nowhere near Pixar’s great creations.

The Steve Carell-starring animated comedy is an instant classic, and for anyone with kids, this might buy you a couple hours’ peace.

The jokes are fresh and very funny. Gru is a likable, lovable villain whose accent adds to the wackiness of the script.

Plot
In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this house is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon. Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world’s greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Elsie Fisher).
