Anomalisa marks another brilliant and utterly distinctive highlight in Charlie Kaufman’s filmography, and a thought-provoking treat for fans of introspective cinema
Anomalisa is like a puppet show on acid, but in a good way. Charlie Kaufman’s unique vision and attention to detail make this movie a must-see for anyone who wants to experience something truly different. The stop-motion animation is stunning, and the story is both funny and heartbreaking. It’s not your typical rom-com, but that’s what makes it so special. Plus, who doesn’t love a movie with puppets?

Kaufman has created a very smart movie, and I ended up liking it for what it was. It is not a heartwarming romp. It is a dense, sneaky movie about narcissism, cruelty, and Lisa’s own shy resilience.

Anomalisa is fascinating, and I cannot say I was ever bored by anything that Kaufman and Johnson were choosing to show me.

By the time Michael and Lisa are up in that hotel room, trying so heroically to say the right thing, the picture has transcended its gimmicks.

There’s something magical about the malaise which raises this above mere misanthropy – a heightened sense of fragile life that perhaps only puppets could hope to achieve.

Though fellow fatalists Woody Allen (when in Dostoevskian mode) and Todd Solondz occupy similar territory, the arrival of Kaufman’s stop-motion drama Anomalisa reiterates the uniqueness of [Kaufman’s] surreally skewed metaphysical inquiries.

Deep Focus Review
Charlie Kaufman makes love like nobody else. He builds it up from the basement, all the gangly genitals of it, knickers whittled and shined up, authentically imperfectly exquisite. He is the poet of our age

To be perfectly honest, one could make the case for most of Charlie Kaufman’s filmography – as either writer or director – being remembered as exceptional, and deserving of all the praise in the world.

The experience of watching Anomalisa is, as Kaufman intended, a singular one. It’s never less than enveloping, charming, hilarious or touching.

Battleship Pretension…
Plot
Michael Stone, an author that specializes in customer service, is a man who is unable to interact deeply with other people. His low sensitivity to excitement, and his lack of interest made him a man with a repetitive life on his own perspective. But, when he went on a business trip, he met a stranger – an extraordinary stranger, which slowly became a cure for his negative view on life that possibly will change his mundane life.
