Sharp direction and some outstanding performances make Munich: The Edge of War a gripping historical drama, even though the ending’s no secret.
Munich: The Edge of War” is like a spy thriller meets history class, but in a good way. The performances are strong and the direction is solid, making up for the fact that we all know how this story ends. It’s like watching a suspenseful game of chess, where you know the outcome but still can’t help but be on the edge of your seat. Plus, who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned war-spy drama? It’s like James Bond meets World War II, and it works. Overall, a well-crafted and enjoyable film.

If the movie is handsome in an oak-paneled-office way, there’s life in it too. You feel there’s something at stake for the two young would-be heroes, as there is for the world.

Munich – The Edge of War starts off as a prim spy thriller and ends as an insufferable civics lesson.

Irons gives the kind of performance you want more of as a window into the psychology of leadership, so the fact that he has to share it in so disjointedly dull a slice of history as “Munich: The Edge of War” is regrettable.

The disconcerting ending doesn’t ultimately cast a shadow in [the film’s] virtues and the interesting subtext of the story is solidified: we don’t choose the time we get to live; but we can choose how we respond to those times. [Full review in Spanish]

Munich – The Edge of War had the potential to be so much more but instead, it ends up just being historical fan fiction and gets Neville Chamberlain completely wrong in the process.

It is an obvious commentary, but a prescient one nonetheless, and the storytelling still maintains a suspenseful structure that is captivating.

Munich: The Edge of War might have benefitted from being a bingeable miniseries with more time to flesh out the characters and the climate. However, strong direction and solid performances make up for a sense that everyone knows where this is going.
