In This World (2003)
RT Audience Score: 88%
Awards & Nominations: 3 wins & 3 nominations
In This World is a cinematic masterpiece that delves into the harsh realities of the refugee crisis in a way that is both poignant and thought-provoking. Winterbottom’s direction is nothing short of brilliant, as he manages to capture the raw emotions of the characters and their struggles with such authenticity that it feels like a documentary at times. The amateur actors give stunning performances that are both heart-wrenching and inspiring, and the film’s message is one that will stay with you long after the credits roll. It’s a film that demands to be seen, and one that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the privileges we often take for granted.
In This World is a film that will make you feel grateful for the life you have. It tells the story of refugees in a way that is both personal and eye-opening. While some critics may find fault with the emotional response, the film’s ability to cut right to the heart without any phony Hollywood uplift is what makes it so powerful. The amateur cast adds to the authenticity of the story, and Winterbottom’s direction is nothing short of remarkable. This film is a must-see for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the refugee experience. Plus, it’s a great reminder to appreciate the little things in life, like a warm bed and a hot meal.

Puts something like a personal face on what is so often rendered merely as an abstract statistic: the plight of the contemporary refugee in a violently ‘globalized’ world.
