Perhaps the slickly made documentary overstates the cultural impact of a little-seen and widely disliked film. However, it earns points for scraping at the surface of something rarely discussed in film fandom – homosexuality in horror.

There are interviews with academics and drag queens and fans of the horror genre, and this gives the movie a wide-ranging perspective that helps us better understand the moving personal story at its core.

Scream, Queen! feels a bit self-indulgent at times, exploring so many tangents that it tends to lose focus. Nonetheless, it’s a fascinating sociological examination of the circumstances surrounding a film that inadvertently became a camp classic.

The doc expertly examines the initially negative reception to the first Elm Street sequel’s queerness, plus how that affected Mark Patton as a gay man and an actor.

Scream, Queen! is slickly, formulaically produced, with viewers immediately able to spot the standard film-centric documentary template at work – but like Freddy’s Revenge, it delivers far more than its audience might expect.

Morbidly Beautiful
Patton comes full circle on who he was, is and wants to be, bringing his long nightmare to an end that’s cathartic for him, and deeply enlightening for us.

Nerdist…
Plot
Wallace University is rocked by a string of murders. Kappa House, the most sought-after sorority for pledges, is ruled with an iron fist (in a pink glove) by its Queen Bitch, Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts). But when anti-Kappa Dean Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) decrees that sorority pledging must be open to all students, and not just the school’s silver-spooned elite, all hell is about to break loose, as a devil-clad killer begins wreaking havoc, claiming one victim, one episode at a time. Part black comedy, part slasher flick, SCREAM QUEENS is a modern take on the classic whodunit, in which every character has a motive for murder… Or could easily be the next blood-soaked casualty.
