Howard Ashman (1950-1991) was an American playwright, lyricist, and director. He is best known for his work on the musicals Little Shop of Horrors and Beauty and the Beast, for which he won two Academy Awards. He was also a major contributor to the Disney Renaissance, writing the lyrics for The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Pocahontas. Ashman was a passionate advocate for LGBTQ rights and AIDS awareness, and his work was heavily influenced by his own struggles with HIV/AIDS. He died in 1991 at the age of 40.
