Dawn Steel (1946-1997) was an American film producer and studio executive. She was the first female president of a major Hollywood studio, Columbia Pictures, and the first woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Steel was known for her tenacity and her ability to get films made despite difficult odds. She produced a number of successful films, including Flashdance, The Jewel of the Nile, and Steel Magnolias. Steel was also a passionate advocate for women in the film industry, and she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1998.
